Any thoughts on how to combat that?
Sure, a custom lid from ClearView or similar. But not something I'm worried about at this point. Not a fan of lids if I can help it. I feel bad for the little guys but at least they are not as expensive as saltwater fish! lol
It's probably been about a month since I've lost one.

Planted tanks are different. It’s not about freshwater VS saltwater. It’s about planted tanks AND saltwater.

both is the way to go

For the OP I have an Oase and I love it. I run one Oase 250 and a Cobalt (which I love also).

I have a waterbox reef and just bought a waterbox 48 long for a freshwater setup similar to yours. Where did you get your freshwater supplies? Everybody online seems sold out!

I love the idea of a planted tank. I want the red Sea 900. For a planted tank. Just feel I'm over paying for a reef set up and only going to do planted. But a huge planted sounds awesome
Look at the Clear Pro line from Waterbox. You don't need a sump and all that for FW. You totally can, and some do, but a good canister filter works very well. That's the route I went.

Well i got my stuff quite a while ago! The tank/stand was from waterbox, the controller i already had, the lights are from GHL, and the filters I got direct from Oase's website. Everything inside the tank (substrate/livestock) I got at my LFS.

Thanks. I will check out those cannister filters. I haven't used one since 1987!!!! I already have lights. If anybody can recommend a good FW store near JX florida, hit me up....

Looks really good Dennis!

How often do you clean the lily pipes?
Any special technique to keeping them pristine?
Any things you wish you did differently with this set up?

I clean them probably once a month. I just use a flexible pipe cleaner (I'll link to the one i use below) for the inside, and the outside is cleaned with sponge. Each one only takes about 5 minutes but I have 4 of them. If you let it go too long you can always soak in a vinegar solution like with reef stuff. The prefilters in the canisters I rinse clean in a bucket of tank water every two weeks.
So far the only thing I'm regretting is the white sand (LOL) and ever putting moss in the tank. I curse that moss. Stupid moss. Moss, you suck. Suckity suck suck suck. ;Bored Once you start trimming it gets everywhere and grows wherever it lands.
