Livestock Detail
I load up on astrea snails to keep algae in check. I also have four pincushion urchins. A purple tang helps with algae as well. It is over 6 years old, and only 3 1/2” long! So the 75 gallon is enough room for this particular tang.

Additional Aquarium Information

What do you think are the keys to your success in reefing?
Definitely patience and stability. I learned early on that adding coral too quickly to (even a four month cycled tank!) can be detrimental. When parameters get out of whack, I have to decide if a quick bump or slow adjustment is best. But over the years, these coral and fish are pretty well adapted to minor changes in alkalinity and salinity. But in the long run, patience always wins.

I nominated this tank for ROTM at one point in time. I think it’s an incredible tank.

Such a stunning tank. I L.OV.E. this so incredibly much!
Thank you! Mostly easier sps corals and achievable for anyone, imo.

Thanks again! I’m indifferent about that because this tank is nothing special in comparison. I’d rather see those that have extraordinary tanks win. But I appreciate it!

Would you be surprised if you learned other winners felt the same way about their own ROTM tanks?

It’s human nature to become accustomed to their accomplishments.

From my perspective, your tank is superior and above average. It takes skill and knowledge to have such a beautiful tank. Don’t forget that. :)

Okay, I HAVE to ask... how did you get so lucky with that purple tang?! Is that normal for them? I want one lol.
Sorry I took so long to reply, I don’t get notifications sometimes. I think I lucked out because it hasn’t grown much since I’ve had it. It is very healthy and active though, but is only 3 1/2” long at about six years old. I’ve seen other adult purple tangs that are much larger. Maybe it has to do with the location of origin? But I love teasing others about it, but should share that this fish is an exception to the “rule”. Most purple tangs do require larger systems. Take care and Happy Reefing!

Here’s some updated photos after the salt mix incident a couple weeks ago. I lost a couple coral, but not too bad overall. I thought about upgrading the size of this tank, but it’s the perfect size for the location it’s in. I have added some new coral, and the tank is recovering nicely.
