I have a 36”x19” stand with a 38”x20” granite top. Would this stand support a 38x20 aquarium? I’m not sure if the overhang on the sides would be a no go.

The stand is made of 3/4” plywood and is quite sturdy. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I don’t have a picture of it at the moment. My plans are to upgrade the stand on my current 36x16 Fluval M90, but I’m planning an upgrade which will center around a 38x20x18” rimless tank.

That upgrade will be a long drawn out process of acquiring the pieces. So I’d like my stand upgrade for my current setup to be able to work for the future tank. The dimensions of 36x19 seem like they’d be fine with a solid granite top and 1” overhang on the sides and front, but I’m also no structural engineer either.

I believe the shorter top would create pressure points at each end

I've seen stands designed where the front glass hangs but its along the whole length so no pressure points there.

Can you replace the granite?

The granite would be added onto the stand. The stand is 36x19. The granite top would be 38x20. I would source the granite separately.

Basically I’m looking to use a wood engineered vanity to use as a stand. I’ll source a piece of granite for the top.

Is the tank a rimless flat bottoms tank or a framed tank. If it is framed then all the weight will be on the 1” lip. If it is flat bottom then you are fine as the weight is distributed across the whole top. If the granite is thick enough you should be fine with either scenario it’s just more of a concern with a framed tank

Tank is not framed and is rimless. As I will be adding the granite additionally I will have the freedom to go with whatever size I choose. I may also consider a concrete top as well. But leaning towards granite.

One concern would be how the stand is build and supported under the granite.

Let say you have the top and back of the cabinets top rails so that the center will not sag you will be fine. I agree a picture will say a 1000 words:)

On my stand since the sump is remotely located I added center supports and I can add 61 x 21 foot print to a 56 x 20 stand

Well, I was under the assumption you had an actual aquarium stand and using the components you already have.
I'm not sure about buying a store bought vanity and using that, depends on design and material if it will hold the weight properly and not rack or fail.
Might want to post pics.

Personally I would build what really fits if you can't buy a stand.

Aha, that's different!

I thought your granite is 36 and your tank is 38. Yeah If you're going to source granite that is at least 38" then you should be fine.

Granite will not "bend" on the overhang and you should be fine. 1" on either side is nothing with granite that is 1" thick.

Agree with other poster, pictures of the cabinet would help.

I’ll see if I can find pictures but it’s rather sturdy, and I would plan to beef it up in some spots. The stand that came with my Fluval M90 would pass as ikea furniture so I’m not too worried about a vanity. My first ever tank was a 75 gallon on a 48” kitchen cabinet base. Worked great for the few years I had it.

I could always build something but don’t really have the time or desire to. I’d rather go with something more furniture grade.

An "engineered vanity" sounds like a particle board vanity. Unless you buy this vanity from a cabinet maker and request that they use plywood instead of particle board which will increase the cost. I wouldn't gamble with particle board.
