Hey everyone, as people can see from my tank thread, I’ve recently set up a new tank. It’s got some algae at the money, which I’ve CUC arriving tomorrow for, and a whitetail bristelooth on the way.
Anyways, onto the crux of this debate which I’d love yer opinion on.
I’ve a fish list, and am wondering could I possibly add on some anthias and blue streak cardinals or would it be too cramped. My tank is 120x50x80 tall (cm) so about 125 gallons. I’ve definitely have adequate filtration, just wondering if the tank would be over crowded.
Current inhabitants;
Pair of ocellaris
Bangai
Pair of mandarins
Sand sifting goby
Pistol shrimp and wheelers watchman goby
Melanrus wrasse
Firefish
Copperband

On the way (ordered in LFS)
Whitetail bristletooth tang
Trio of royal grammas
Pair of longnose hawkfish

Considering
5 bimac scribbled anthias
10-15 blue streak cardinals

The fish that are on the way will be added in the next month. The ones I’m considering are for down the line once I’ve sps sticks, Fiji leather and the like reaching into the top of my tank. It’s high flow and I’ve an auto feeder I can use for that section.
With my tank being 80 cm deep, I was thinking the anthias and blue streaks would hang out up-top?
What do people think of this

I think you are OK with this as long as you have many hiding places in the rock work for small fish. 5 bimacs is my only hesitation in a 4’ tank as they will get large and chase each other to establish dominance.

Also the longnose hawks may be risky with the cardinalfish if small.

15 blue streak cardinals are going to be way less bioload than 5 bimacs. You are fine with the cardinals. I’d probably pass on the anthias.
Yes I’ll see how it goes. It won’t be till down the line, until I’ve a yellow Fiji leather, some sps and another few bits in the top portion of the tank. I love how they shoal in cover in David saxbys tank, going through his sps and gorgonians!

In theory, the number of fish doesn’t matter as long as you are able to keep aggression down and maintain water quality and fish health. This is especially important with acros. It becomes harder to maintain as you add more fish. Individually, anthias won’t add a lot to your bioload, but they require several feedings a day. It can add up quick. The hawkfish may eat the cardinals depending on the size difference. If you’re looking for a fish that will go in and out of sps colonies, there are some more peaceful species of damsels in the Chrysiptera genus like the springeri and azure that would add less bioload than the anthias and would be less likely to become snacks for the hawkfish. Another damsel to consider is the starki. Mine is a model citizen. I don’t know anyone who has kept more than one together in a 125, so it may not be exactly what you’re looking for if you want a schooling fish.
