So I have an extra 12 gallon tank and was wondering if it's possible for me to turn it into a refugium/frag tank. I'm thinking Live Rock + Biohome media + chaeto in the bottom and placing and egg-crate to split up the half. I would have frag racks and more eggcrate racks on the upper side. Is this viable... and a smart idea? and would I need any other filtration? Anyone have experience doing something like this? I guess it's pretty much the same thing as having corals in your sump?

Are you going to plumb it in to the existing tank?

more like going skimmerless. It works. If you can, go with pretty macros and decorate the tank. It works and you can make it pretty.
Warning crabs love macros. and chato needs good flow.
