I have a red sea Reefer 250. The first 4ish months were perfect I did not have to adjust the valve once. One day it started backing up in the back chamber and dumped in a ton of rodi water. Since then it does this MULTIPLE TIMES A DAY EVERY DAY! I have to adjust the valve by turning it open like 3 full turns to get water going again and then closing it back every single time to get it back to normal. It has been doing this for almost 6 months now and I can’t even just enjoy the tank I have to wake up out of my sleep to fix it. If not fix the return chamber completely depleted to where the pump would run dry. I have tried cleaning the valve cleaning the pipes adjusting the sump wall increasing the pump speed …everything. I know people replace with a gate valve but I know there are PLENTY of people who still have the OG valve in their tank. What am I doing wrong/how do I fix this?

I do not want to trickle water down the emergency pipe. I try to keep it half an inches below the emergency pipe. I run the tank with RedSea ATO and ReefMat

Would also like to note I am running the Vectra S2 pump. Would it be possible I need to run it at a lower %? I was originally running it at 70 I believe but that’s too much overturn. I have been running it at 50 but I just turned it back up to 60 yesterday and now I feel it’s been worse than when it was at 50%?

you may need to back down the return pump a little.

I would adjust it as follows

keep the pump running, turn off your ATO. Then CLOSE the valve and let all the flow run through the emergency drain. Then slowly open the valve and adjust it as needed to get the desired water level height in the overflow box.

It seems like you are running the return pump too high. I would reduce to 35%-45% range and see if things are more stable. Why not try running with a trickle going down the overflow? It doesn’t make any noise if you do that.

I’ll try turning it down even more. And doing the trickle down still didn’t help. It would either trickle or start pouring down because it would still backup. I don’t know how I got here like I said the first 4 months were perfect it makes no sense

I have moved into a new house checked all my lines completely reset up the tank and still having this issue. I guess my only resolve will be getting a spears gate valve….

I had a problem that sounds similar to yours the other day. You must make sure the overflow slots are clear or you will see the water level rise and the system will dump RODI to compensate. Mine were partially clogged with Algae just enough that the pump was returning water faster that the overflow could handle.
