Hi all,

I just added two additional power heads to my 75 gallon FOWLR(currently, planning on adding softies and maybe LPS). I added one (HYGER 1050 GPH) to disrupt the surface and increase oxygen exchange and the other (HYGER 2100 GPH) to create a gyration effect with the existing powerhead I have in the bottom left corner of the tank. I’ll be honest, I’m not sure the GPH of the existing powerhead I had before the hygers, but my LFS told me it was rated for 90 gallons.

My question here is positioning of power heads and flow amounts. Are the bottom power heads at a good level? Should they be more towards the middle of the tank? Is this too much flow? I only have a couple of clowns and a CUC in the tank and everyone seems more active than before when I only had the one power head so I think these were a good upgrade, but want to make sure I’m not missing anything to oversight.

Thanks everyone!

It looks good actually I would add another powerhead on the left side to get even more surface agitation. I’m not sure if I see a skimmer on your set up but with or without a skimmer surface agitation is very important and often underestimated. All my tanks look like the rapids on the surface.

Flow should be chaotic. You can get this by pointing your power heads at each other. When you put them all facing the same direction, you are basically stirring a pot.

Thanks mojo, good to know! I don’t have a proper skimmer so will definitely get another small powerhead to agitate the left side and compensate. Appreciate it

Thanks Dom. I’m trying to recreate a bit of a sweeping motion to keep free floating items/food/detritus off the bottom of the tank and pushed into the filter. Would a chaotic flow like that ensure stuff is getting moved into the filtration?

Hard as you might try, you will never get every particle. I would think your tank would have to have the flow of a whirlpool to try and achieve that.

You keep the bottom of your tank clean during weekly maintenance. I scrape my glass, replace mechanical filtration media and churn my substrate. After this, I complete a water change to remove all of the free floating debris.

Thanks Dom. Just repositioned the Power heads diagonal to one another and create a more disruptive flow. Also added the additional powerhead to the surface on the left hand side of the tank to increase oxygenation! (Took this vid yesterday, have since changed the direction of corner powerheads).
