I'm currently designing a sump which will include a mat roller and skimmer. I would like the ability to bypass (partly or entirely) these 2 units as required. My main objective in this case would be to mechanically remove larger pieces of debris before they enter the sump. I'm thinking a row of filter sox but the coarsest ive seen is 300 micron.

Thoughts?

A lot of us use 3D printed filter cups with filter floss or PolyFil. Several users are also using Sera Filter Wool.

I'm thinking something a little coarser than that as i only want to filter out the big stuff that may exist. I want to use the reefmat and skimmer to polish the water on a part time basis. Especially in the beginning.

I considered the same thing when i designed my sump and to make a complicated plan simple just resolved to set it up so I can have a filter sock over my inlet to my sump from the overflow which means all water has to pass through it and its out of the way.
That being said, aside from a large change to the tank where things get stirred up I really don't use it much as eventually a point will come where nothing big is moving through the system anymore.
