All,
My fish room/office is not connected to our Central Heat and Air. So I have a small floor heater for the Winter.

I went in the this morning for my coffee and fish time and my tank was running 87 degrees.

I got my insta-read out and confirmed it.

The room is 87 degrees as well.

I've got no windows and no way to get cold air in, so I turned on my floor fan and have it blowing full speed.

I got 2 bags of ice and double ziplocked thema and put them in the sump. I put the galllon back in the main compartment right before the return and the quart bag in the return chamber.

Is there any thing I need to be careful of, not lowering it too quick, lowering it too slow, etc???

I've had the Ice in for about 5 mins and went from 87.2-86.1, is this ok

I can get more ice and more bags, I have them on hand (I like to cook), and lower it faster, but I am not sure I want to shock them with an ice bath.

I had another fan readily available and got it going, have the door open and draffing in some cold air from the bedroom (office is connected to the bedroom).

Its going down steadily.

Should I do anything else?

I normally run at 78, so I am thinking when I get to 80-ish, I pull the bags and cut back to one fan and let it come down a bit slower, or should I keep it until it hits the 78.5 range and then pull everything?

If you were on fire, how fast would you want someone to put it out? Fast as possible without dropping you in the artic sea, right?

What's going to prevent it from climbing right back up to 87 again?

Well the floor heater was thermostat stuck. So I replaced it with a new one I have. These things only last a year or 2 and I buy a few when they are on sale. We have an RV and they are a lifesaver if you ever run out of propane in the winter while on a camp.

I am 99% sure I have the source of the problem identified and fixed.

Good. If this were my tank, I would get it down to 81* or so, remove ice and let it run 20 minutes. Then check temp again before adding less ice to get where you want, don't overshoot and drop it too low. If things look fine, they should be. Acropora likely won't appreciate the temp swing, but death isn't automatic.

Thanks, I only have soft corals and 1 Hammer, Duncan, Zoa, Xenia, and GSP. They all look fine, swaying in the current like normal. My one zoa did close up, but its newer and I am thinking it is still acclimating.

I am at 82.9 degrees and it has been steadily coming down.

I will pull at 81 and monitor it.

I am not moving (unless to get something) until it gets to its normal range.

My fish (2 Clarkii) are doing fine, they are active and doing their normal - here there, nope there is better. What's over here and let me check out that too.

You obviously have a door. Place a fan there pushing hot air out. That forces cold air in through the space above the fan to replace hot air transferred out. Should be quick. More CFM helps.

Can’t make or destroy energy. Can only transfer it.

I have nice Honeywell tower stand fan and I have it oscillating so it is sucking cold air from the bedroom and pushing it into the office.

I think it is all coming down now, nicely.

I did run out of ice, 3 gallon bags full, so impressed with how much ice that ice maker holds.

Luckily we got our annual snow in Knoxville, so I am using icy snow packed down to get as much as I can.

Double bagging so I don't have a rip, tear or spill that throws crap in my tank.

Sorry about your thermostat problem!

I'm kind of shocked you didn't have outright deaths at 87 degrees.

I think you're doing everything you can, and I think you're back bellow the danger zone now. I would continue to slowly bring things back to whatever temp you typically run your tank.

Could I ask what heater you're using here? I'm asking because we are campers too :)

Good luck!

I am at 81 degrees and I am kicking myself in the butt. I was doing something to the tank and had the low temp set to 75, and it started beeping and I turned the ringer off. Dumb, dumb dumb.

I just realized, why the heck wasn't my alarm going off.

Fixed it
All is good, I think its ok now

Thank you all for the help!

This is the heater, we were at Big Lots or somwhere and they had them on sell for 19.99, it may have been Rural King...

It is great for small spaces and I have had great luck with the thermostats working and making it able to control the temp without an actual number to set, its not digital.

It has a tip over safety and I've been using this brand and model for a couple of years and had great outcomes.

Thank you for the reply! I realized right after I asked that we don't typically camp with electric hookup, so I guess we just can't run out of propane lol! But good to know, thanks again!

Good luck with your tank situation!

A lot of places even have an electric hookup at the tent sites. I’d you are way off grid then, you are out of luck unless you have solar.

We go to a state campground like 99% of our trips because we love it there, but none of their sites have electric. Doesn't bother us at all. But sometimes for sure we'll go other places that do offer full hookups.

This was a couple of trips ago. No shortage of light at our site :)

Nice. We don’t get out much this year. My older daughter had surgery and a long recovery so we spent time doing that and getting her well.

Already planning for this summer though.

That's understandable. I hope she's doing better now!
