"Get what you want the first time."
-A smart guy with lots of cash

Fall 2017 I had no idea what I wanted, because I had no idea what I was doing.

Here's what I ended up with a year later.

IMG_0179.jpg

A FTS that looks like it came from the 90's. Tank is a SeaClear System II 50 gallon acrylic AIO I picked up secondhand(I am a certified Craigslist connessiuer as you will see). Doesn't seem so bad until you realize the majority of display area of the tank is only ~10" from front to back due the rear filtration area, and yet.. it's 20" tall. Compound that with standard acrylic style eurobracing which leaves me with a gap of about 6" wide to work with. As you can imagine doing anything at all inside the tank is a nightmare.

IMAG2536.jpg

You can see some of my "innovative", some would say "revolutionary" DIY solutions(another recurring theme you will notice in this thread) such as a piece of cardboard as a light blocker and my threaded rod/square tube light mount.

Here's an above view.

IMAG2538.jpg

More professional problem solving visible here such as the tube coming from a hole I drilled in the skimmer collection cup (Coralife Super Skimmer 65, emphasis on "Super" hence the need for an emergency overflow) that exits into my miniature refugium.

Corals grow up so this is good right? Another photo from last fall.

IMAG2491.jpg

Some of the trials by fire I have so far experienced include expired test kits, refractometer losing calibration, ATO+Kalk failure, ostreopsis dinoflagellates, HOB skimmer overflow, GFO misuse, dead return pump the night before vacation, and a general misunderstanding of nutrients and the Big 3. I cut my reefing teeth on this system and am glad I didn't go any bigger or more complicated.

OK now let's go bigger and more complicated.

But first a final rundown of my current system, some eyecandy, and some teasers.

Yes, it is an older MR2. Not sure if I'm actually going to use it or not yet on the new build. Got it up and running with a single Beckett using a Jebao DCP 18000
Niceee!

The frame for my hanging fixture.
IMAG2583.jpg

Kind of a flat blue color, matches a big sliding door I have in the room it will be going. Drilled the aluminum for mounting my Kessils down the middle T5 complements on the sides, a pair of Reefbrite Supras, one of which came with a broken socket.

IMAG2572.jpg

Luckily Premium Aquatics and ReefBrite are great companies and sent me replacements which I already installed.

Looks great! Best advice for a tank transfer, or move for that matter, have more saltwater ready than you think you will need. At least have some extra RO/DI water made. You always need more than you think.

Some more of the plumbing. Thanks to @TaylorPilot Exotic Marine, loving the overflow already.

IMG_20200911_232251.jpg

Can be dead quiet at low flows, yet is also able to handle all I can currently throw at it.

IMG_20200911_232840.jpg

Currently using a Jebao DCP-18000 pushing through two @Vivid Creative Aquatics 3/4" random flow generators. with the pump set to 100% a full siphon on the main drain with gate valve wide open is only slightly overwhelmed. Temp setup has the feed line for the sprayers coming underneath the tank and up but I am planning on moving this overhead as my lighting fixture is completed.

Bean Animal style relieves a big part of the stress of a tank for me. Redundancy and overflow protection are high priority with this build. Rubbermaid sump life show me yours so I can steal your tricks. IMG_20200911_232245.jpg

Rubbermaid life, no regrets.
Well, need to reduce microbubbles making it to return.

What could it be in the mystery trash can???

It's the MRC MR-2

IMG_20200913_192000.jpg

Upgraded with a new injector assembly. Put it in beside one of the old ones for comparison. Still breaking in as of now but bubble production was looking good this morning.

Definitely works. Figuring out a good airflow and water level mixture.

Nighttime hues so blue it hurts. Daytime spectrum is going to be a bit whiter, as in full spectrum funshine. Gieseman Tropics and old faithful Blue Plus getting burnt in the Supra's

Turbos insist on sleeping wayyyy outside the tank. First time experiencing this. Thoughts?

Skimmer Brute now doubles as refugium. Powered by some cheap 150W grow light off Amazon. Haven't done nitrate testing since turning it on but film algae growth on glass has definitely slowed.

Encrusting montis in for a week or so now. Rainbow on the overflow just made contact to the acrylic and is starting it's slow takeover.

IMG_20201001_210517.jpg

Chili pepper down low getting some acclimation time as it had been getting whipped by a chalice at the LFS. Has mostly repaired all of its lost tissue and also went through a wax/shed cycle like leathers do.

IMG_20201001_210418~2.jpg

Topdown view, Clown goby looking for a nice crevasse and what I'm guessing is a Monti Digi, currently going through the green cycle. Can see the coraline starting to take off, seems to have a preference for certain types of live rock. The rock in this tank was taken from 3 different existing setups in 2017 and all started as "live", though it has been in a holding setup for over a year until recently.

IMG_20200904_201153__01.jpg

You better believe I did my re-cycling in a trash can. Chaeto survived a year in stasis, let's pray the vermetids did not.
