Afternoon all,

Recently, I had a direct lightning strike to my home, and while it did some damage to the house, it really messed up my reef equipment. I lost a fleece roller motor, tank heater controller, and ATO controller. Everything was hooked up to 1000 Jul protectors, but they did nothing.

My question is, what is everyone doing to help/mitigate damage from power surges?

I would like to note that the equipment got hit, but the tank and the critters seemed fine, and nothing in the water was affected as far as I can tell.

I'm in Ga, home was built in 2019, but the heck is a surge protector in the panel?

EDIT* quick Google search and I am now super irritated that that is a thing and that its about $100 dollars

You’d almost think there would be a homeowner insurance discount if you have one. But the way they increase deductibles probably a wash for them.

Strictly for the inconvenience and setting aside the cost to replace the stuff in the tank, I think I'm going to get one wired up this weekend.

Plus, with the storms being so bad here recently, it seems like a decent investment just to help save the big appliances on the 220 outlets

@BeanAnimal and other electrical minded reefers, think something like an Eaton CHSPT2ULTRA is a good surge protection solution for our reef equipment?

The impending solar flares had me thinking about it as apparently they can effect the grid.
