Hey all. I think I’m about ready to dip my toes into seahorses. I’m thinking of rearing 2 pairs (not sure of the breed yet).

I’m looking for tank suggestions. I was leaning towards an AIO or possible a rectangular tank with an AIO insert. I will add a sump for volume so not sure if this limits my choices for tanks. From what I’ve searched, AIOs are height limited so maybe they’re out. Just talking out loud.

Pet smart had a rimless bow front & stand for $120 ish,
other than that I like the dimensions of my 60 but don’t like the black rim…
2ndly, I’ve been wondering if the height requirements for seahorses are slightly overstated … just one sample opinion

I will check out pet smart, thanks. What brand is your 60?

Of all the reading I've done, I think I'm leaning towards your opinion as well. Also, the gallons per pair 'recommendations' as well might be overstated.

I got a standard Aqueon 60g, it houses a mixed pair, but it had 4 adults all 6 -7” long, no kidding.
I’m hardly a expert but 30g a pair is close to true, but of course you can get more per gallon is a larger systembwith all the bells and whistles: skimmer, reactors, et
My 150g grew out 15 adults all full size 6-7”

Very nice write up. I appreciate the thought and insight. I had originally looked at WB but not willing to dish out the cash. I'm beginning to lean more towards an IM AIO minus a stand with a 40gBR sump, a baffle kit, and a black box light for the sump. I can't get myself to mentally agree on anything for whatever reason (although my wife gives me the eyeball whenever I start planning).

I know that feeling and look quite well.
yeah I cant decide between a SH tank and a nice planted FW tank for my 2nd tank.

40br make very nice sumps and DT too.

I had the SCA 90 cube a few years ago it was nice heavy as heck 12mm glass only think I did not like about it was the huge overflow box. I just got the tank and did a DIY stand and a 40br sump.
I see used ones pop up from time to time.

I am sure you have but look at used tank market sometimes there are some great deals. some not too.

if you have a petco/pet smart go and BS with them they might be able to get you a good deal and if not at least you can see 1st hand the different tanks to get an idea what works for you.

good luck! do a build thread when you get it going. i'll fallow along.

I have the SCA 90 currently. I really need to update to my current build thread.

If I'd do it all over again, it's too deep for my current liking... I think an 18-20" deep is what I should've went with. I need something with a smaller footprint and the used tank market in my 'willing to drive' zone is nonexistant.

the SCA 90 would make a great Sh tank imho.
but maybe you can find someone to trade for a 2' cube tank like the WB 60.2 or the RS xl 200 or the like. I am still on the fence if I like cubeish tank or not. I think for a SH tank it would be OK but not for a reef. I know I know there are lots of amazing cubed reefs out there but I like the look of a 40br better that a popper cube.

I heard of ppl doing sh in an AIO. like bio cubes and what not but I think the filtration would be a pain. IDK I was looking at the WB 50.3 aio but decided i would rather have a sump.

The best set up I saw was a tall tank with a super deep mixed media sand bed, live and growing turtle grass, and another kind of grass. ** The Sand bed, had an under gravel filter, with a small single reverse flow power head. He used to dose a plant fertilizer for Freshwater Aquariums. Had an abundance of pods. Also there was a small HOB Filter, with a skimmer in it.

**Kind of wonder if he pulled up some of the Sea Grass, U of M developed. Highly illegal now to do that!
