Pipe Organ Corals are often confused as hard corals, but they are actually soft corals. They are found throughout the Indo-Pacific and have hard, bright-red, calcium carbonate skeletons shaped like organ pipe tubes. Polyps extend out from the “organ pipes†during the day and will quickly retract if they are disturbed. Each polyp has eight feathery tentacles that are usually green or gray in color. They obtain most of their energy though photosynthesis but also benefit from regular feedings of zooplankton, phytoplankton and/or Cyclop-eeze. Pipe Organ Corals do not have sweeper tentacles so they can be placed in close proximity with other peaceful corals.
