Local news here stated the other night that FEMA is lining up temp housing for people in Lake Charles affected by the hurricane.

I had heard they were going to do this again. It didn’t turn out so well after Rita. These FEMA trailers were hastily put together and a lot of the materials used made people sick. Lots of lawsuits for this after Rita. They at first said that the trailers were not an option this time. They are very small, but better than living on the street.

It is a little difficult keeping up with current events with no TV or newspapers. Only 9% of the city has cable TV or internet. That systems is said to not be available to 100% of the population until mid-November. I am lucky. I at least have a house to live in and electricity.

As horrible as it was, it could have been much worse. The storm didn't sit and the storm surge was incredibly low.

I still can't believe the power these storms have.

As we waited for a bus in the frosty weather, the woman next to me mentioned that she makes a lot of mistakes when texting in the cold.
I nodded knowingly. ‘It’s the early signs of typothermia.'”

Storm surge‘s highest level found to date for Laura was at Rutherford Beach on the coast at 17+ feet. Those towns down there are leveled - again. Third time in 15 years. As the crow flies about 35 miles from my house. Our elevation is at 13 feet above sea level.

The storm surge from Rita made it to about 10 miles south of where I live. It was 18 feet at the coast. Not sure how far north it came for Laura, but expect it was similar. Rita got lost in the debacle following Katrina. Rita was a very powerful storm that hit us one month post-Katrina. It was a category 5 storm only a day prior to making landfall. To date the most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Gulf if Mexico. Katrina stirred up the Gulf ahead of it, bringing cooler water to the surface and that put the brakes on Rita. It was a category 3 at landfall. Had Katrina not preceded it, Rita would have been the worst case scenario for us.

While I know this storm could have been worse had the surge made it this far inland or if the storm had dumped more rain on us, I can tell you that the people living down here don’t want to hear the “it could have been worse“ phrase. Laura will be in the top five strongest wind speed hurricanes at landfall in U.S. recorded history. It was essentially a 35-40 mile wide tornado that was still a category 1 hurricane when it reached Shreveport in the extreme northern part of the state. I believe the amount of damage will by far exceed that of Rita.

Sorry for rambling on...

Due to recent massive expansion of SASOL Industries and the opening of the Golden Nugget Casino, our population has increased by about 25,000 people over the last couple of years. Population of Lake Charles prior to this was about 75,000. Many of the workers are in apartments. No other local family or friends to move in with for many. Some people are living in tents or in their cars. Many local businesses are not open because of damage or displaced employees. Only a handful of restaurants are open and many of them are serving out of food trucks in their parking lot.

Dealing with all of this and Covid at the same time is bordering on ridiculous. Our governor turned away electrical crews from some out of state workers because of Covid numbers in their home states. Mind blowing.

I wasn't trying to lessen the suffering just trying to see the possitives. After being in 2 f2 tornadoes and seeing the damage of an f5 I can sympathize. Im glad you and your family are safe and the death toll was tremely low.

Exactly. He is consumed with Covid. I believe he still has daily Covid press conferences. I don’t know for sure because I don’t have TV anymore

Loki loves the little kitten Lucky. Wants to be around him all the time. He is so cautious with the little guy, its so sweet. He will be uncomfortable so Lucky will be comfortable

Our GSD as friendly and loving as she is would never allow this to happen. At least not at her current training level. That litmus test (maybe wrong word choice) you see working dogs do to graduate where they line them up and let loos the cat or other animal? Our GSD would fail every time :D

Very pretty picture and just shows how animals get along or know of risk and raise to the occasion of caring. Something humans lack these days yet animals get.

He was rough to start not because he was trying to hurt Lucky but due to size. Lucky is a pound and Loki is 57. He's a quick learner

Skylar is like yours. If its small and moves it needs to be chased and consumed.

Ugggghhhhh. Why do people asking for help threads always end up with people bashing others instead of trying to help. What is done is done, now move on and try to help. It isn’t that hard. Especially when the person who messed up admits they messed up, but wants to fix things.

Ok enough of me venting. How is everyone?
