Hello Everyone, I figured I would go ahead and jump right in. I'm new to saltwater aquariums and to this forum. After having several freshwater tanks over the years I'm finally going to switch over to saltwater. I've been learning all I can about them these last few months and almost every time I have looked up a piece of information I find it somewhere on this forum so I decided to join.

I have slowly started to buy equipment I think I will need and I'm hoping to avoid as many mistakes as possible. I have already bought an RO/DI system, 2 Brute trashcans, a heater, powerhead and a refractometer to mix my saltwater. I purchased 20 lbs. of dry live rock, a bucket of instant ocean salt mix and have had it curing in warm saltwater for just over a month now. I also just purchased a 28g cf-quad nano-cube as my first tank and I'm excited to get it up and running. Unfortunately the light malfunctioned straight out of the box, I'm hoping its just a bad ballast or bulb. I'm curious if anyone else has used this tank and light. I'm wondering if I should fix the light that it has or just go ahead and upgrade to a more reliable light.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to R2R and to the salty side of things. You're off to a good start - doing a lot of reading and research before adding Water! Slow and steady wins this race.

Nice, welcome to the salt side. I also started with fresh/planted aquariums and went with a 24g nano-cube when I went salt.

Yeah, when leds started coming out, I took the top off and changed the light. Not hard at all to do if the light really is busted.

I have filed a warranty claim since it was new but I haven't heard back yet. I thought it looked pretty easy to change it if i needed to and I've started looking at LEDs. So far I like the Kessil a160 with the mounting arm. That looks like a good affordable light that would be easy to install on my nano if I need to change it.

Welcome! Hate to hear about your light but its a good excuse to upgrade. I started with freshwater/planted tanks as well, but recently started a SW 28 gallon cube. Tank is still cycling, but I picked up an Aquaillumination Prime off craigslist for $100. The new Prime HD's are affordable, and are controlled through wi-fi which is pretty cool. You can also use a mounting arm like the Kessil has.

Awesome I haven't thought about craigslist. I'll have to check it out. Ive got a few of my rock curing and my empty tank, but I'll certainly be posting lots of pictures of my progress.
