Currently have this 120g mixed reef with a 40g sump and will be moving everything into two 90g tanks stacked on top of each other in the wall separating the living room and the closet in the 2nd bedroom. I'll be cramming as much rock as I can into the bottom 90 gal sump tank and doing a new rock scape for the top tank out of dry rock.

Tank and Sump.jpg

Here is a bad sketch of what I'm trying to accomplish:

Sketch.jpg

Should be a little easier than most in wall builds as the 2nd bedroom does not exist right now and will just need to build the wall around the tank instead of cutting up a current wall and rebuilding for a tank.

The new rock scape was built with a combo of expanding pond foam for the heavy arch piece, and then mostly just superglue, JB weld, and rubber cement for the 100's of other smaller pieces used. Magnets were used to attach the pieces to the back and left side wall. I had a lot of time on my hands middle of 2020 when I decided on this tank transition.

Steel stand.jpg

Already had a little hiccup with the stand build. Originally had a steel stand made but it ended up being totally inadequate with a 1/4'' bow in the top before I even added water.
Decided just to make a wood stand:

Wood Stand.jpg

Primed the wood with Killz and then pained in an outdoor vinyl so hopefully it will resist the moisture that will build up in the closet.

Bought one used 90g tank for the sump and had one new 90g custom made for the top tank:

custom 90g.jpg

Was built by a local club guy who happens to own a glass shop and occasionally builds tanks on the side. Hope it holds up :)

Went with the Eshopps Prodigy L slim overflow as I wanted to maximize space in the tank. Looks super sleek but holy smokes is this thing loud. Sounds like I am living on Niagara Falls. Will need to put some kind of sponge or filter floss in the box to stop the splashing of water.

Lights on the 120 are reef breeders photon v2 and a couple of their supplemental bars which are totally inadequate for coverage on that tank with 24'' width front to back, so I'm looking forward to seeing the results over the smaller 90 that only has a width of 18''.

The sump tank / coral overflow tank will be lit by the cheap black boxes that I ran for many years prior to the reef breeders fixture.

I don't run any skimmer or filter media so I might as well display the sump as it pretty much looks just like a second tank with a couple ugly drain lines and a return pump that I'll work on hiding.

The rear box is a bean animal no? Should be able to be near silent.

That is correct it's a bean animal style but it is anything but silent. Water rushes out of the two holes in back and slams into the back wall/drops a couple inches to the drains which is causing all the commotion.

Not sure what I am doing wrong. Can post pics later.

Hoping to put the bottom tank on a slide rail system so I can easily pull it out for any maintenance etc.

Was looking at these rails and wondering if anyone has any cheaper alternatives that could handle the 1000 lbs.

currently only about 7 inches clearance from the top of the tank to the stand top so really not ideal for getting in there for.

What is this 2nd bedroom used for? Guests?

Is the plan to be able to see THRU the tanks from the hallway into this bedroom?

Sorta a privacy issue.... women will have nothing to do with that 2nd bedroom. They'll go to a hotel instead or thumbtack a towel to your drywall

Yes 2nd bedroom is for the occasional guest. The tank will be in a closet with a door that closes so there will not be a see through issue. Plus the back is painted black.

Need to figure out the sound issue from the overflow though. Definitely could hear that through a closet door as it is now.

These might help you understand your noise problem. I think you are missing control valves or just not adjusting them correctly:

As for a 'slide out sump' I find the best method is light rails for guides and have a base and caster system that rolls directly on the floor (like a dolly but with non-swivel casters). If your stand is already constructed that kind of nukes that idea though...

Thanks for that. Yes I do not have control valves but was able to solve the issue last night.
Just had to raise the water level in the overflow box.

Since my display tank is all dead dry rock I would like to see if it is leaching phosphate before I tie it into the tank with all the corals and live rock. I did bleach it for a week when I originally received the rock last year but it's my understanding that only tackles the decay on the surface. Is that correct? I do not want to acid wash these rocks so that method is out of the question.

Currently the plan is to add just enough salt water to submerge the rocks and then circulate the water with a good powerhead and test every couple days or so.

Would the $15 Salifert test kit for phospahte be a good one for this application? Also wondering how long I need to keep testing and if there is a better way to figure out if it is leaching phosphate?

That's probably the way I would do it. Salifert is hard to read unless the phosphate is high in my experience. I switched to hanna ultra low range to take out the guess work.

Moved the corals from the 120 over to the two 90s last weekend.

could not fit all the rocks so I have a 20 gal tub temporarily plumbed to the system on the side.

Any idea how long it will take for all the new dry rock to be able to populate with enough beneficial bacteria to effectively handle the bio load?

Right now the rock scape is way too packed in both tanks and would love to start pulling pieces out fairy soon.

One month update on the new tanks.

the new dead rock is getting some color to it. A little too much cyano is forming though. Will probably have to siphon some out next water change in a few week

Corals are still randomly strewn about as I am having a creative block when it comes to a decent placement plan. Once they are down I don’t want to move them.

I did realize I screwed up the rock scape in that I have the tallest on the side that opens to the hallway. It not only blocks view but also flow. So that was not great. Still works though. Just not optimal.

Anyone have any ideas as to why only a few photos get loaded at a time? And it’s. It the first few of the group. It’s so random. All 14 show as 100% loaded.

taken with standard iPhone that I load all my photos from.
