Currently have this 120g mixed reef with a 40g sump and will be moving everything into two 90g tanks stacked on top of each other in the wall separating the living room and the closet in the 2nd bedroom. I'll be cramming as much rock as I can into the bottom 90 gal sump tank and doing a new rock scape for the top tank out of dry rock.
Here is a bad sketch of what I'm trying to accomplish:
Should be a little easier than most in wall builds as the 2nd bedroom does not exist right now and will just need to build the wall around the tank instead of cutting up a current wall and rebuilding for a tank.
The new rock scape was built with a combo of expanding pond foam for the heavy arch piece, and then mostly just superglue, JB weld, and rubber cement for the 100's of other smaller pieces used. Magnets were used to attach the pieces to the back and left side wall. I had a lot of time on my hands middle of 2020 when I decided on this tank transition.
Already had a little hiccup with the stand build. Originally had a steel stand made but it ended up being totally inadequate with a 1/4'' bow in the top before I even added water.
Decided just to make a wood stand:
Primed the wood with Killz and then pained in an outdoor vinyl so hopefully it will resist the moisture that will build up in the closet.
Bought one used 90g tank for the sump and had one new 90g custom made for the top tank:
Was built by a local club guy who happens to own a glass shop and occasionally builds tanks on the side. Hope it holds up
Went with the Eshopps Prodigy L slim overflow as I wanted to maximize space in the tank. Looks super sleek but holy smokes is this thing loud. Sounds like I am living on Niagara Falls. Will need to put some kind of sponge or filter floss in the box to stop the splashing of water.
Lights on the 120 are reef breeders photon v2 and a couple of their supplemental bars which are totally inadequate for coverage on that tank with 24'' width front to back, so I'm looking forward to seeing the results over the smaller 90 that only has a width of 18''.
The sump tank / coral overflow tank will be lit by the cheap black boxes that I ran for many years prior to the reef breeders fixture.
I don't run any skimmer or filter media so I might as well display the sump as it pretty much looks just like a second tank with a couple ugly drain lines and a return pump that I'll work on hiding.
