The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

According to my LFS and what I’ve read, rhomboid and fairy wrasses don’t require sand. Is that true? And if that’s true, would they still benefit from having a little in there?
Only benefit to a fairy like the rhomboid is to cut down on reflection, which algae also does.

I use a little sand most times as clean tank reflections a lot of fish don’t settle in. Just cover bottom if needed. Lots of oxygen specially at night. More oxygen the better. Sand sleepers i hit hard with prazi and feed gc in lrs. I’ll treat them with metro. Copper not so worried so 14 days then display. Tangs or fish in qt with tangs I’m cautious but still like 14 days copper but will go to 30. Fairy wrasse and non sand sleepers same. I like to keep tangs separate and separate sand sleepers and no sand sleepers but rarely works out.
sand sleepers mostly flukes and tangs mostly ich/velvet. Fairy’s are in the middle. Also where I get fish from plays in to treatment
Any specific type of sand you would recommend in a QT tank for the wrasses? Tupperware cup or just a thin layer across the bottom of tank? They won’t be in QT with any tangs, just the foxface. They will be in the display with a tang gang though.

I will say I’ve noticed that my rhomboid doesn’t far with no meds in QT currently is doing well for the most part out swimming occasionally. But my fairy wrasse has kind of tucked himself in the bottom corner of the tank under powerhead since last night and has only come out from that spot for food. Wondering if it has to do with his reflection, or if he’s still just acclimating to being taken from LFS and put into a new tank.

I did drip acclimate them also before putting into my qt

Any sand I got or can get. I do a ton lyertail on bottom of reflections are problem. You only need sand if wrasse sleeps in the sand then it needs to be couple inches. Rhomboid doesn’t need sand if he looks comfortable. If the reflection freaks him out and he doesn’t settle then little sand help.

Gold?

This fish looks great! The pictures I have always seen were always so cartoonish trying to accentuate the gold. How does it behave?

It is a wonderful resident. No issues with any fish, and I have a ton of them. Just “bounces” along all day, pecks at rocks here or there, and then sleeps in the sand next to the clam every night.

The rhomboid seems to be doing better than the clown fairy. The rhomboid will swim around a little bit, but the clown fairy is seemingly staying tucked into the corner on the bottom of the tank. He was swimming around doing fine in the LFS

I love me some wrasse's, so I want to see everyone's wrasse pictures! Please share!

I've been practicing my fish taking.. Snapped a decent one of my Naoko Wrasse, still need to polish up on my skills though!

This exact wrasse caught my eye today, and I nearly got him. I'd love to know anyone's experience, or can link me to a previous post.

These guys can be rather 50/50. I have personally yet to find an aggressive specimen and I’ve looked after 7-8 excluding the two I’ve personally owned.

There are some where they’ve been aggressive though so it’s that caution although you get that with any wrasse or fish for that matter.

In terms of care, these guys are easy. They can be hard to find in stores though as they’re an uncommon wrasse from Indonesia. Over here, C. naokoae gets labelled under the names of similar species like C. joanallenae and C. socialis.

I should have gotten that one instead of the 2-3 inch melanurus male I got for $45

Hello! I just bought my first Wrasse. Any tips? It's a male Hooded Flame Fairy Wrasse.

They are a great looking wrasse. They can be very skittish especially when transporting. I had one e in my observation tank for several months and was moving it to my display using one of the small 2 gallon Lowe's buckets. It shot I to the side and broke its back. I recommend transporting only in a bag or net Inside a bucket to prevent injuries. They are a mild mannered Wrasse. Post a pic when you get it

I had one for awhile, then he turned into a jerk, Killed to other fairy wrasses and one Leopard.... But from most of the others that have posted. Mine was the rare exception.
