The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Is that a red sea cleaner in that second to last photo or a pencil?
That is my male splendid pencil (Pseudojuloides splendens).

A red sea cleaner (Larabicus quadrilineatus) would eat all my SPS and LPS.

Well my poor little Melanurus had been harassed to the point of hiding and not coming out. So I did something I’d been intending for a while. Since the little brute of a Dottyback was getting worse with its attentions a evictedit to the rear hob refugium. 3 days later she deemed it safe to come out again and freely roaming about the tank this morning. Forgive the photo spam.

There is a thread in general discussion where someone is trading out a melanarus for a "much more peaceful" six line.

I had to LOL really hard on that thread.

OOh and good morning! Not much action down here so I thought I would just share an early morning picture of my first fish awake now:

Stopped by my LFS to get some more ROE for my fish. They had a “sunset fairy wrasse” (which I’ve always known as a Pyle’s fairy) that was still there from last week.

Today I saw the poor thing had been all bitten up by a puffer fish that was still being kept in the same tank. It made me so sad to it in that shape and I asked how much they’d part with it for because I wanted to give it a shot of living. They were asking $125 sticker price, and they said “we can do 20% off.”

Made me so disappointed. The fish is wounded, but it maybe would’ve had a shot.

It’s a shame to see the fairy that way… I cant believe they were still asking that high of a price for her even in that state with a nearly unhealable tail.

I told them that it was a shame, because that fish has no chance if it stays there and also because it’ll be worth $0 to them pretty shortly.

The damage wasn’t just limited to the missing tail fin, it had some chunks taken out of the fleshy part just before the tail. The whole thing made me really frustrated because they didn’t seem to care for the well being of the innocent creature, but also didn’t seem to care about selling a fish that was seriously wounded and almost certainly unhealable to a customer for such an amount.

Really unfortunate :/

Tomorrow will be one week since I added my red lined wrasse to my dt, still no sighting of her at all. I’m started to get worried now, should I go looking in the sandbed to find her or give some more time?

https://youtube.com/shorts/bObztiJH-XM?feature=shareI really could have sworn I posted this in here the other day but apparently not. Maaaaan, I’m getting old. Lol

moved the p. Attenuatus and p. Mccoskeri over to the display the other day. Everyone seems to be getting along fine. The mccosker stayed by the acclimation box for a day after I opened the top. He couldn’t figure it out that he could swim out until another fish swam in and showed him the way. Hahaha

This is normal, nothing to be worried about. It’s not unusual for a wrasse to stay buried for several days to a few weeks when they’re first introduced. Once she feels comfortable in her new environment she’ll resurface until then resist the urge to go digging in the sand for her. Doing so will only stress her out and make her hide longer.

I don’t know why YouTube keeps making my videos look like it was taken with a potato but……

those two really make the size of my earls very noticeable. Haha

Earls looks like a giant compared to those too haha!
Man this video makes me miss my attenuatus and earls sooo much. Such beautiful wrasses with cool personalities.

any suggestion on some reef safe wrasse? looking to add some to my tank but prefer experienced opinions
Welcome to the thread we love helping out, but we need some info about your tank first.

What size is your tank?
Do you have sand?
Do you have a lid?
What other fish are in your tank?

I love watching those two interact. The attenuatus holds his own even though he’s like a 1/4 the size. Haha

Wow a few weeks! That blows my mind they can hide for that long, but yes I will for sure let her be and not disturb the sand. Just wanted to make sure it was normal for them

Man that Earls looks beautiful!

Also keep in mind the wrasse can and potentially will move in the sand if they realize your trying to get them, so leaving the sand bed alone is smart choice
