I'm curious have most wrasse owners stopped vacuuming their sandbeds? I've recently added 3 wrasses and I'll probably add 3 more. I don't have issues with either phosphates or nitrates so I'm considering just adding a sandsifting star to my CUC. The more I read on wrassses the more I believe my glass lid should never come off. The main reason I remove the top is to vacuum during water changes. Think I'll just siphon off 10 gallons and replace and see.

I never vacuum the sand. I have plenty of nassarius snails and a fighting conch.

I’ll also say that it’s only my 4’ tank I’ll siphon the sand on in the long term but my nano is suffering the nasties so I will siphon that every so often.

You can still vacuum and probably need too for excess detritus. I have 3 glass lids and just open one at a time rather than removing. Once my cleaner wrasse jumped up onto the glass (and several times into my hand) and just put him back. As long as your there and cleaning I don't see a problem. It's not like you're leaving the lid open for days where anyone could jump, not just wrasses.

Never done it, never will, that’s why we got sand sifters and CUC for that. It’s easier that way, less stressful on wrasse and less mess

A while back I posted a picture of my dragon with a shell in its mouth. Saying that the hermit crab had finally met its match. Well guess what?! It survived!

This hermit has survived three invert eating eels and many not reef safe wrasse. Now Its finally in a safer tank with 10 mostly reef safe wrasse!

Yeah agreed, always as necessary. But maybe I don't need to do it every 2 weeks
