Leopards are one of the few types of wrasses that can be kept in a harem in captivity. However, I would be reluctant adding a single specimen to 2 existing ones. But if you added a trio that would help diffuse aggression.

That's pretty much what I thought, thanks. My tank doesn't have room for three more fish of this potential size so I think I'll just observer for now. Should have gotten three in the first place to avoid this problem. I wonder if there's much danger of my female transitioning to male as well - I'd definitely have to remove one of them then.

Female Macropharyngodon usually don't transition if a male of the same species is present.

That's good. What would you say my odds of long term success are with a 'pair' (aware they're not really paired as such)?

I would say around 2:1 in your favor. I've had some leopards work out 2 of the same species in the tank, some not work out.

So never seen this happen before.. got this male eight line flasher from live aquaria a week ago! Did great I. Acclimation box for 3 days I found him on his side today in the tank 2 days after being released from the acclimation box.. look at the large knot on his head it appears almost as if he died from some brain edema..

What kind of top do you have. They jump so hard that they may died of trauma from hitting to top. If you have a hard top, you may want to change to a net top. I am sure my netting help save multiple wrasses. They really hit it hard and just bounce back down. No harm done.

I don’t think it’s related to an injury at least in my tank.. I have an artfully acrylic custom mesh top..

There are many things a fish can bump it's noggin into... powerheads, rim of the tank, rockwork, etc. Freak accidents like that will just happen from time to time... especially with a newly added fish who is already going to be jumpy and might be getting harassed from resident fish. I think your hypothesis is right though... looks like he hit his lil head on something really hard :(

I recently lost my Pintail. He was perfectly fine and social and eating like a pig One day I saw his pectoral fin was bent looking. The next day he had a chunk out of his head missing. Ate some but acting a little strange. The day after that he was gone. I have not seen him in over a week. I have BRS netted top and never saw him jump. I think he hit a rock or something. Just weird.

I had a flame that had his head rotted in quarantine tank. Never knew what happen. I have had a lineatus that was eating great then started hiding and died in perfect looking body no sign of pathogen. So now I treat all fish in nitrofuracin green powder for any bacterial infection now.

Yeah mine was in quarantine for over 2 mos and seemed fine. Pretty frustrating.

This Blue throat is also very beautiful. He was at Petco for 3+ months and lost all color. Recover color very quickly in my tank, but not quite healthy yet.
