If he hasn’t eaten in over a week I would expect him to be pretty lethargic and hiding a lot. If that’s not the case, then he’s probably eating a little. You could try live brine shrimp or LRS reef or fish frenzy to entice him into eating again.

Yeah when I feed he swims around like a nut case but I don’t see him eating the mysis.

What other wrasse can I keep with my Melanarus?
was at the LFS the other day and my 5 year old wanted a banana wrasse or another one that was called a blue head wrasse I think? I googled them and it sounded like they didn’t play well with others. Thanks!

Halichoeres chrysus is bright yellow and is a good option. I recommend using an acclimation box when introducing new wrasses to established ones.

If you folks could give me your input, I would love to hear it! I am looking for a list of wrasses that satisfy these criteria: must be hardy/disease resistant, not expensive (ideally under $80), great personality/interesting. Beauty and not too timid or terribly aggressive are a plus.


For example I love the six line (when I get lucky and don’t get a terror) and I think a Melanarus will be next.

My best bet would probably be in the Halichoeres genus I’m guessing.

Any personal favorites that satisfy those requirements? Can you make a list of a few that could be compatible together??Thanks!

These wrasses would meet your criteria. However, if you have a Sixline in your tank, all bets are off.

Thanks Orion, for the suggestions via photo now I need to go figure out which species these are!
To answer the other question- the tank is almost done cycling now, so no fish yet. But soon I’ll have a melanarus and six line hopefully.
Wrasses are my favorite fish, especially the halichoeres genus, so I’m just trying to make a list of compatible favorites that are affordable and hardy primarily.

I would very strongly suggest, from personal experiences, that you don't add the Sixline. If you do it will severely limited your ability to add other wrasses and fish.

Need to do more research on the fish you are going to buy. That Dragon wrasse going to be a foot huge (12 inches), while not ugly but certainly not as exotic as the juvenile, and will wreck your tank and eat everything. (internet picture)
