The Wrasse Lover's Thread!

Already putting the pintail in his place and he is a good 4 inches. Figures she comes out today with all this talk about her. Hmmm...what wrasse next.
Now my Kuiter’s needs to come out. I don’t know what else to get. I have preorder a trio of a certain leopard’s that are being TTM/ condition for two more weeks. Can’t wait for these.

This was your Vivien’s at TSM. Almost grab her too

This was her friend. Only two survives from 12. last year they had more and all survived. longer ship times is no good every minute counts That’s why TSM won’t get fish now. Big money saved to support that place sitting idle Shame

I was wondering why they had so few fish and no longer had the pre-order tab. I prefer fully quarantined fish from TSM. My LFS says that one of the 3 collector in Hawaii, a native, just reapplied for his collectors license so I'm hoping to get a jordani by the end of the year. Can always hope ;)

I hope that some of the hawaiian wrasse do come back into the hobby, I’d love to see a female chyrsocephalus appear in the LFS again.

But aside from that, here’s why I actually came back to this thread, what is it that makes a wrasse suitable for Halichoeres? I know the throated teeth is what makes a wrasse a Macropharyngodon but what about Halichoeres, Cirrhilabrus, Paracheilinus, Coris ect?

I may get a chance to replace my potters sooner then later. Every day it bothers me he jumped from me not paying attention. I have a flame that I keep adding to others but it just can’t behave. It gets one more chance

Halichoeres are very close to Macropharyngodon. Look at the jeweled. That fish has Ben labeled both and most people still call it a leopard but it doesn’t have throat teeth. So is it a leopard that doesn’t have throat teeth or a halichoeres that looks and acts like a leopard.

Found Kuiter’s this morning after putting her in tank Thursday. Shrimp was having breakfast. I have bad luck with shipped leopards. Yes they are fragile but still. Not feeling confident with next order coming. All 3 need to survive that batch!!

Yeah, that’s what intrigued me, the jewelled is labelled as both Halichoeres and Macropharyngodon, that’s what makes me wonder what separates Halichoeres from the other genera. Like, why wasn’t the Jewelled put into the same genus as the Gold Nugget, ect..

I'm sorry. I've decided I'm not shipping leopards, pencils, tamarins, or tilefish anymore. I need to see them active and eating well, and settled in properly before they come home.

That’s annoying, this is also what makes me stay away from any sand sleeper and shipping them. I’d rather see them in person, this is also why I passed on the gold nugget, because it was stressed and looked like it would’ve died, it also didn’t eat.

I wanted to look into gold nugget and how it differs from leopards and halichchoeres. It’s all just humans making something up lol

Agree but had to try. All three non survives wasn’t held as long as I wanted but close. Next batch will be in captivity for 6 weeks or so. 2 weeks to settle and 4 TTM and mild treatment needed. Tanks are sterile so only strong survive

Sorry! I thought you were mentioning two separate things. That the Kuiter’s was out swimming while the shrimp was having breakfast. My bad .

Interesting! I’ve always wanted to know this too, lol.
I’m still surprised that the gold nugget isn’t in Halichoeres yet the similarly shaped and looking fish (Jewelled “Leopard”) is. Maybe @SaltyT knows the answer?

thanks. Hate not have the close relationship with TSM now. Was on a roll with my list and they came in perfect timing last year. I’ll get the relationship back but will take awhile. I never think I’ll lose a fish from TSM knowing the process

I love the throat the th on leopards. Makes them look scarier then they are.

Yes! It does haha, my blue star when she opens her mouth looks scarier than she is actually. I love moyer’s because of the throated teeth too but can’t bring myself to getting a mature male and not a female from my LFS.

We didn’t pic easy fish. Almost got a moriah idol that ate great. Then they said one day it may decide not to eat so I passed.

After being out of the hobby for awhile and getting back in wrasses we’re always my favorite fish to see. Recently grabbed these two. Divided & Pintail

AHA! Caught the little wrasse out. Very rarely do I get the good photo opportunity for this guy - The leopard and naoko can’t stop wanting to be in the spot light haha. Think I’ll next try grab a possum for my nano but I’m still questioning it.

Here’s the cheap alternative to my dream Gold Nugget haha. I hope she stays small for another few years to come, can we start a chain of macropharyngodon? Even better if it’s a chain of M. bipartitus!

It's the teeth. They lack the throat teeth of macropharyngodon and lack the large canines of halichoeres.
