Compared to Hawaii the coral biodiversity is much higher. Tons of gorgonians, sea fans, brain, montipora, caggage, and these giant vase like corals (or are they sponges? Some are definitely sponges but others are hard?)

At the same time a lot of dead or dying corals too. About the same as Hawaii though I think with the reduced tide and current the algae here is worse. However I have seen 6+ft thriving gorgonians which was pretty incredible to see.

I know the ones your talking about. Skuttles off to find pix. You can often find crabs in them.

Most likely sponges as well - dark reddish is a common coloring for a number of different vase-shaped sponges, particularly some of the photosynthetic ones in the Caribbean. Some of these vase-shaped sponges are also noted as being hard to the touch.

Yeah, those are Azure Vase Sponges, Callyspongia (Cladochalina) plicifera - they're beautiful sponges, but reportedly very difficult to keep in aquaria (a few different places sell them occasionally).

Hey @Slocke the nonencrusters are likely a "astrea" of some variety. Tubastrea, Cyphastrea,... Not likely Leptastrea though.
