This hobby sucks. Each time I grow a show size colony it has issues.

1st my Cali blue tort 10"x10"x16" to dead, all gone. Grown from a 3" frag

2nd my A. Hyacinthus 20"x10" bottom level 12"x8" top level. Grown from a 3"-4" mini colony

and now my A. Exquister 16"x8"x10". Grown from a 2.5"-3" frag.

It started with a tiny dead spot 1/2 way up the main branch months ago. In the past week the dead spot became this:

When I pulled it out last night to frag, I saw the base had the same recession:

leading to this:

Its things like this that make me wish I only had a small tank and no need for large colonies.........

Sorry to see that Rik. I had some issues earlier in the year also where STN took out several colonies and threatened my 12" colony of Cali tort. It does suck but I was able to stop it somehow. Good luck.

Sorry to hear that it happened again ... I agree sometimes things happen without explanation. It happened to me recently that I saw some of my sps are STN'ing on the middle part but not the base. Its weird but I manage to save some few pieces. Hope yours turns out ok ..

Man-I am sorry to see that-the only time I see STN like that is when I mess with the flow patterns in the tank but they usually recover in time-dumb question maybe, but what things are you thinking it is?

You have/had some amazing colonies. From what I have found with Acropora, it seems to only get so large in captivity. After they reach a certain point they start to go down hill. I think this is where fragging comes into play. This is only from what I have experienced from large colonies.
Beautiful coral!! Sorry for your loss........

Sorry to her it, Rik. You have some very nice corals. I'd imagine this happens to every SPS keeper sooner or later. In the short time I have had my reef, I have had periodic recession and regrowth with three wild colonies. My captive bred corals raised from frags seem to do much better.

Sorry about your sadness dude. That really does suck. I also feel your pain, I just lost a whole huge colony of cap that I raised from a thumbnail frag to Montipora Nudibranch. It took 3 years to grow that thing~
