I was thinking about a purple tang and maybe a white tail or a Kole in my tank that’s coming in this week. What do you think? Or do you think I could have more? I would like to keep them the length of their life and not have to return them.
The "Tang Police" probably hate me! But I’d say go for it if you can get a smaller one relative to your tank size. You could do both as long as they are juveniles; worst-case scenario, you just have to buy a bigger tank down the road!
I’ve had my sailfin for two years now. He was the size of a half-dollar when I got him, and now he’s a total tank. I highly recommend buying your tangs pre-quarantined. If they aren't, make sure you watch the fish at the store for at least 30 minutes. Ensure he isn't flashing, has no visual signs of sickness, and ask the store to feed him to make sure he’s eating well. From there, try to use the same food the store used to help him transition. Just remember that tangs need nori to graze on as well.
Hopefully, that helps!
