Hello all, just got my leds and in the process of building a canopy to hang them. What are the pros/cons to making a canopy with or without a frame? I see some framed online and some use the siding as the frame and mount 1x2s or 2x2s to hold it on the tank lip. (how most manufactured canopies are)

Ive been working with 1x2s but the last few boards have cracked...so frustrating!!!

Looking for pros and cons. Thanks!

I answered on one of the other forums you posted this question in. Basically I did frame mine but I used 1x2 oak rather than whitewood for longer longer lifespan and I countersunk and predrilled all the holes so nothing split. I also used exterior grade glue and stainless or galvanized deck screws depending on the location. After it was all put together I sealed and white epoxy painted the inside of the canopy and stained and applied 5 coats of exterior grade satin spar varnish to the outside. Been good for 9 years now with no problems.

Thank you!!! Should i paint the whole frame before i pit the finished sides on or no? I would think moisture could still get in..
