No evidence that they help anything other than the bottom line of the manufacturer.

Most of the reputable companies want to make something that provides results - it’s easier to sell that

The issue is that it seems like aminos do a great job at feeding stuff like vermitids instead of making our acros go nuts

The issue, IMO, is that there is no way, without extensive experimentation, to prove cause and effect in our systems. We don't even know what is in many of the additives available to us let alone whether or not they are a net benefit to our systems.

You guys should relax. It’s a scientific fact that corals can uptake amino acids from the water column, wether it’s for building proteins or as a nitrogen source.

I think many hobbyists are finding that aminos are borderline snake oil

I don’t know any coral farmers that use them for growth or color

Ignoring the snake oil bit why do you think WWC uses amino acids?

Not promoting the use of but there are a few aquaculture companies that both use and promote their use.

Yes, corals use amino acids for various biological functions. They can absorb dissolved amino acids from seawater and obtain them through their symbiotic relationship with Symbiodinium (zooxanthellae), the photosynthetic algae living in their tissues. Here’s how corals utilize amino acids:

1. Nutrition & Growth – Corals can take up dissolved free amino acids (DFAAs) directly from the water, which serve as a source of organic nitrogen for tissue growth and maintenance.

2. Protein Synthesis – Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, which are essential for coral tissue development, skeletal formation, and enzymatic processes.

3. Symbiotic Relationship – The zooxanthellae inside corals can synthesize and transfer amino acids to their coral hosts, supporting their metabolism.

4. Stress Response & Metabolism – Corals regulate amino acid uptake and production to cope with environmental stress, such as bleaching, temperature fluctuations, and ocean acidification.

5. Skeletal Formation – Some amino acids are involved in the synthesis of organic matrices that help in coral biomineralization (calcium carbonate skeleton formation).

Different amino acids play specific roles in coral biology. Here are some key ones:

1. Essential Amino Acids (EAA) – Cannot Be Synthesized by Corals

Corals must obtain these from their diet (plankton, dissolved organic matter, or symbionts).

• Histidine & Arginine – Important for tissue repair, growth, and immune responses.

• Lysine – Helps in collagen formation and skeletal development.

• Leucine & Isoleucine – Used in protein synthesis and energy metabolism.

• Methionine – Supports antioxidant defense and coral stress response.

2. Non-Essential Amino Acids (NEAA) – Can Be Synthesized by Corals

Corals can produce these, but they also absorb them from seawater.

• Glycine & Proline – Key components of the organic matrix that helps in calcium carbonate skeleton formation.

• Glutamate & Aspartate – Crucial for energy metabolism and neurotransmission in coral nervous systems.

• Serine & Tyrosine – Involved in enzymatic functions and cellular signaling.

3. Role of Amino Acids in Coral-Symbiont Interactions

• The zooxanthellae (Symbiodinium) produce and transfer amino acids like glutamine and alanine to their coral hosts.

• In return, corals provide nitrogen in the form of ammonium, which symbionts use to synthesize amino acids.

Amino acid metabolism is essential for coral health, especially during bleaching events when energy sources are disrupted.

I had the impression KZ coral vitalizer is aminos…
I may be wrong, KZ is very secretive with the bottles.
Maybe so? What sold me was the claim that it wouldn't raise N03 or P04. So far so good and no cyano.

I can’t say, but I know the smaller scale vendors that I’ve talked to at shows don’t use aminos didn't find that they did anything meaningful

I wonder if Lou wrote that for chat gpt?

I don't take such a cynical view, but I understand why others do.

Most of these companies are trying to find ways to provide value, and make enough profit to survive and keep growing while they're at it.

I haven't found a manufacturer yet that misses all their shots, nor one that hits all their shots.

We just have to cherry pick the best stuff.

What might sell tropic. Marins is that it’s supposed to lower po4
I’m checking that claim personally and in a few days I’ll conclude

Is it chat GPT? It looks like marketing as opposed to science to me. I would not believe that text for a second.

Here is how I see it.

Many corals have hybrid ways to intake and obtain nutrients. If a coral has a mouth, and the ability to digest food, then it is designed and intended by nature to do so. Along with photosynthesis. They both are needed and the coral will not thrive without both

This isn’t spending energy opening its mouth trying to catch some aminos. It is ready for food to supplement it

Stunning
The closest I’ve got in similarity is a cynarina ultra red which I’ve had 7-8 months and I never fed it , if I was trying to grow it specifically I would
