I'm looking to buy a used red sea reefer 170 from a guy and I don't think I saw any information on what to check for when you're buying a used tank. There was some information here and there but not really consolidated.

So far I've got these things as important issues to check for.

Research for before checking the tank
  1. Make and model of tank
  2. List of included equipment given (pump, sump, lights, rock, etc)
  3. History of tank
  4. Notation of any damages the seller discloses
  5. Pictures of tank
  6. Price and transport of tank

Items to bring for inspection
  1. Pen and paper or a note app
  2. Light
  3. At least one friend for larger tanks
While inspecting at the tank
  1. Note where it's been siting and how long its been there.
  2. Check for seal wear, damages to silicone, scratches
  3. Check for age I.e. Coralline algae, salt creep etc
  4. Check wear on stand/cabinet
  5. Look for chips and cracks especially in hard to reach areas such as an overflow.
  6. Check and inventory all included equipment and preferably test all equipment at the site.
If anyone has more to add to the list please let me know! I'm excited to go forward with getting this tank but I want to be prepared so I won't end up with indigestion.

Fill it...run pumps if possible check for weeping seals and orings, adjust diaphragm valve, check drain supply flow.

Got it! So you would make sure that the seals at the drilled portion of the tank works and as a whole. How long would you allow the tank to run before clearing it for use?
