Ok, so I have a nano reef, its 50L having some algae issues at the moment. But my nitrates and phosphates of course go up over time. How often and how big of a water change should be performed on such a system. It does not use a protein skimmer and is LPS only.

After noticing my nitrates and phosphates being so high after being away, ive had to do a 50% water change today and my Micromussa lordhowensis is not happy!

Personally I run a ReefDose on my nano. One head removes 1% every morning at 6am while the second head pumps in fresh salt water. I have three 5 gallon jugs under the tank. Fresh salt water, fresh water, and discharge. It’s been working really well.

15% is adequate. To address Phos/nitrate issue - Add a small pouch of chemiPure Blue or elite which will keep it under control and polish your water nicely

As long as your ASW parameters and temp are closely matched to your tank parameters and temp, larger water changes are fine. 20-30% per week would be larger.

I should add that quickly changing your nutriient levels is not recommended.
