My wave maker has a night mode that kicks on when the lights go off. It slows down the flow until the lights come back on. It Should I enable that feature? Right now I do not have corals but will be adding them soon.

This is one of those topics where you will likely get both sides of the topic replying. Some do turn their pumps down at night, many feel that's natural on reefs. Others let their pumps run fully all night, arguing that this is really what's natural on the reefs 🤪

My take is that it likely doesn't matter in terms of keeping a happy, healthy home reef aquarium. If you have the option, I think you might as well turn the pumps down at night, it saves a little noise and energy, and may allow some animals to rest more easily.

The R2R #re#reefsquady have further advice or opinions 🙂

Good luck!

I’m in the camp where the ocean doesn’t sleep at night so neither should the waves. I run a random mode 24/7 since the ocean can be calm or turbulent at night. Being by the water I’ve watched enough waves in my life to just keep it random. If anything, I’ve seen crazier waves at night than during the day.

I have mine full blast, all the time. The fish always find a buffered zone, at night. I'm going to cite gas exchange and boundary layers as a reason.

I personally do run a night mode, I like the fact that the flow is different, for a period as stated above the ocean doesn’t stop at night but things like tides and weather cause flow to vary greatly in the ocean, it’s not 100% all the time. I think at night is as good a time as any since some of you corals won’t be photosynthesizing and won’t be expanded fully.

24/7 Random mode.

Change the return pump speeds.. correct me if im wrong but that will fluctuates the water level yea?

I run my return pump same level 24/7.
IMO , i'd mess with the pump (wavemakers) instead.

I'm fairly certain everyone is talking about wave makes and powerheads, not adjusting their return pumps. So, yes?

you're 100% right. my mind wanted to read something my eyes didnt. whoooops
I've done that too many times! Or focus on something blue in the picture when they're asking about the little red thing. 😂

I am also in the camp that the ocean doesn't sleep at night.

My wavemakers are also set to change the amount of flow throughout the day, and to a random "swell" pattern. That is the same setting at night for me.
