Well it seems as if the Blue moon we had on New Years Eve had an effect on my cardinalfish... They decided to spawn!!

I think it was all of our drool that set them off Morgan. :)

Stupid question, but wouldn't you want them to pair off with a different set of genes? Is inbreeding ok with fish?

As long as the parent are wild caught it is common to pair up the F1 offspring.

Never thought about that but it's a good question. I received my pair from a fellow reefer a few years ago. He had raised a few hundred through the years without any major problems. The whole process has to be one of the coolest things to go through especially if you have kids. A side benefit to my reef was the constant addition of bbs . The corals loved em. Wonder if an expert can chime in with an answer to the inbreeding thing.

If you want a perfect example of inbreeding in fish just look at the platinum clowns from ORA or the wyoming whites. Pretty much all exotic colorations come from some form of inbreeding.

Inbreeding can be both good and bad, but mostly good... If there are no clear "bad" traits then inbreeding is actually a good thing. If you select fish with only desirable genes, then unwanted traits cannot appear as the result of the inbreeding. However, it can cause undesirable traits to show up, but in that case you shouldn't breed either of those fish whether it's with "siblings" or not. Inbreeding is also why so many of these funky and desirable (at least for some people) exist. There are some immune system concerns with repeated inbreeding, but that's not something to be concerned about unless you're setting up a more commercial breeding program.
