Ooo! Good question! I do believe there's science that backs their benefits, but I can't point to anything. Following! #reefsquad

I know Credable Coral Labs has been working on something, doing a lot of R&D and testing to verify results from different amino profiles. I am not sure if they have anything published or not, but they are doing academic level research with aminos.

I've been thinking about and discussing amino acids and different DIY amino recipes. Several manufacturers offer amino products.

So what are the current thoughts behind amino dosing? Do we have any hard science that they're beneficial, or are aminos just an expensive nitrogen source?

A couple of longer threads from a few years ago with no solid conclusion:

IMO this isn't something you will find a one size fits all answer for. Amino acids are absolutely essential for life, including corals. Some corals can synthesize all of the amino acids they need themselves so they may not benefit from an external source of aminos. Other corals, including acropora, do need to obtain amino acids from other sources. This doesn't necessarily mean they need bottled amino acids but they do need something added to the tank to provide them.

The best answer I can give you is that it depends on the type of coral you are worrying about and how much of what you feed into your tank.

Do we know what aminos acros cannot create themselves?

The best study I have seen is this one. I'm not sure if it will contain what you are looking for.

Following - I was thinking of picking some up. I am also wondering if anyone uses them for LPS and thinks there are benefits especially in say a QT / frag tank without fish. I have heard a lot about for SPS.
