I was having trouble getting sodium hydroxide for awhile there and almost switched back to Limewater. I see the alure of simple lol

Yeah, I remember that.. I tried it and again I had to have another doser.. I was doing it by hand and the precipitate was crazy lol..

You gotta keep the corals guessing! I don’t believe in stability lol.. I think that’s a dangerous thing to do.. after having 2 huge kalk over doses 24 gallons each time and 2 weeks apart With the snow storm of the century each time and not losing a single coral I believe I’m onto something.

I tried the kz flatworm stop as I’ve seen some guys claim it thickens the flesh and you get better colors.. I did 10ml daily in my 300 for a week and got Dino’s . I also changed from halides to LEDs so I don’t know the root cause and prolly never will as it’s one them things! That’s the only changes I made to the tank in 2 years! I stopped the kz and hooked up a uv light and I’m Dino free again after 3 days.

We have similar dosing KZ protocols so it might be the acroglow or coral boost and one of them has aminos and/or iron which triggers dinos if present. I stopped dosing aminos and iron (never had luck or any noticeable improvement) since it always triggers dinos for me and managed the dinos through weeks and finally seemed to receded as well. Re-started dosing acroglow and coral boost.

One of your doses is triggering the dinos even if your nutrients levels is correct. For me it's always Acropower which is why I switched back to acroglow.

My ph got a high score 9.4 and my alk was 4.3 after the last one..

The funny thing is that I've noticed more Acropora growth explosion after balancing nitrate and phosphates to a ratio of 50:1. So much in fact that I've had to adjust my daily AFR dose and manual adjust alkalinity. Maybe it is related. Maybe not. I am, however, seeing some crazy growth that I have not before.

Well if I remember correctly the bi-product of aminos is ammonia or nitrates.. hence the ammonia dosing everyone is doing.

How much work is involved in maintaining that ratio?

I already have the Trident NP to monitor and I couldn't do that. My hunch is you could if you didn't have any fish, constant water changes, ULNS and dose nitrates and phosphate directly.

That's been noted anecdotally by old school reefers. Dinos seem to be triggered by LED tanks more frequently since it broke out. It's probably something in the spectrum that provides the right conditions.

I am at 50:1 as well - 0.2 phos, 10 nitrate. Where are you sitting?

Yeah I mentioned it a couple years ago and everyone said I’m crazy and bean animal put me in time out! . I still believe it has something to do with it!

That might be it, the UV in LEDs are probably not the same coming from halides or T5s. I also added an oversized UV sterilizer to reduce dinos and so far so good.
