This has been growing in my tank for awhile but I'm unsure of its identity. Any ideas? And I'm speaking of the black item in the pic.

branching sponge, coraline or maybe hypnea algae would be my guesses.

No it's been part of the tank since day one.

Looks like a sponge. Sponges are great for an eco system. Is it under direct light or back side of reef rock? Should be softer to touch .

those are sponges. Generally grows in areas of tank without a lot of light ... generally sponge growth is good for tank .. filter feeds and cleans ..
