This has been growing in my tank for awhile but I'm unsure of its identity. Any ideas? And I'm speaking of the black item in the pic.

Looks like a sponge. Sponges are great for an eco system. Is it under direct light or back side of reef rock? Should be softer to touch .

those are sponges. Generally grows in areas of tank without a lot of light ... generally sponge growth is good for tank .. filter feeds and cleans ..
