What is the difference between leds and fluorescent lights?

LEDs are many small points of light. Flourescents are smooth line of light.

LEDs use small semiconductors to produce light. Flourescents use excited gas to produce light.

LEDs achieve different colors by doping the semiconductors with different elements. Mostly LEDs can not change color. Flourescents achieve different colors by using different gas mixtures and once set can not change color.

Can i grow hardy corals like gsps with leds? So far the little frag has been growing with cheap leds

Yes.

LEDs have a spectrum and the higher end LEDs have better spectrum. Better spectrum helps with growth with all corals but most especially with SPS.

Sounds like with what you are doing your cheap LEDs should be fine.
