What is this stuff?

I seem to have some hazy clearish stuff growing on some of my frag plugs - it's not on all of them. any ideas what this stuff could be? I was able to siphon the longer strings of it out with a solid airline. the shorter (1/4" to 3/8" or so) wont budge...

120 gallon + 20 gallon frag tank + 20 gallon frag tank + 40 gallon sump

running carbon and GFO. 16 gallon water change every week

display tank looks good. It has some light green haxing in a few places, system is still fairly new (new tank, sand and 1/3 live rock 2-3 months ago)

Not sure but i had simular in my 30 gal fowlr tank for about 2 months then went away.

Is yours spreading? Mine doesn't see to spread fast. I do think it is smothering my zoas. Sps don't seem to mind as much.

yeah it does look like dinoflaggelates if thats the right spelling (prob not!), but again, it also just looks like a brown algae. dino's can be VERY hard to get rid of and can be dangerous in a tank, so pls be careful. IIRC, they spread very quickly, so if yours aren't, chances are its just algae. i actually have the exact same type as your last pic, and i got really scared for a while, but then realized its not major.

nothing seems to be eating this stuff. I have been siphoning off every couple days, there is growth, but nothing major. also the corals and affected zoas do not seem irritated. i really would like this stuff to go away!

Siphon out all of it that you can into a filter sock (if you have a nice siphon going with a one inch hose, it will pull it right off of whatever it is on") and start dripping kalk to raise your ph and don't do anymore water changes until it is gone.

Very timely response :) I was just seking advice on this at a local swap. I cut the lights back which helped, but at the end of the day little ground was made. My PH is between 7.9-8.1 - I was hoping not to have to drip kalk as I have two-part running automatically with great success, the kalk is going to throw off my dosing pumps :)

I'll get the calculator out tomorrow and start dripping a controlled amount of kalk.

deff dino. the best way to get rid of it is to first dislodge it with a turkey baster and siphon most of it out. then raise your dkh above normal for you by 2 or 3. then let the dkh CRASH! to almost scary low. it will take a few weeks for the dkh level to drop depending on your bioload. when the dino appears to be gone yoou can raise your dkh back to normal

That is scary! I dose 85ml of two part Rec 1 per day. If I stopped dosing 12dkh to 7 would be in less than a week...I'm worried about loosing a lot of nice spas with this approach.

if it takes less than a week great, the dino will go faster and stress the corals less. ive beat it 4 times in clients tanks with this method with no coral loss. but up to you if you want to risk.
