Especially in this forum, which is why I'm almost never here anymore.

Every single post, if you have ANY kind of question that might even be tangentially related, the FIRST thing you get in response is a string of four words. The same four words Every Dang Time:

What. Are. Your. Parameters?

And people will REFUSE to help you unless you supply them. The answer can be totally unrelated to your parameters and somebody is STILL going to demand you supply them like you have to "prove" you know what you're doing before you're "worthy" of their advice. The assumption here (and elsewhere) is that *everybody* with a question is a complete beginner without a single clue.

And heaven forbid you're a woman. Boy howdy, you'd better have those parameters in triplicate and NOTARIZED. Because what you "think" you've observed in your tank is *clearly* not what you've actually observed. And your incredibly detailed explanation? That's going to be completely skipped over and not read AT ALL because men who started their first reef tank 6 months ago Know What They're Talking About, but YOU don't because your 20 years of experience Doesn't Count.

It IS possible to have a respectful discussion with other keepers without gatekeeping. Too many of you simply enjoy lording it over others too much.

The fact that store employees pretend to know about everything theyre selling, know the answers to all your questions, and make up stupid names for corals. Yeah, I worked for a very popular one years ago and am speaking from having inside experience.

Then again, you cant always blame a salesman for trying his best to sell something...sometimes the customers are simply gullible or naive.

Luckily I haven’t run into this too much where I live and everyone’s been cool. I just get weird looks because I ask the dumb newbie questions. I think the dudes in the LFSs also may think I’m buying fish for my husband’s reef which is far from the truth because my husband loves to see the two tanks we have now but unfortunately wants no more to do with them than that. Oh well.
