The. Gatekeeping.

Especially in this forum, which is why I'm almost never here anymore.

Every single post, if you have ANY kind of question that might even be tangentially related, the FIRST thing you get in response is a string of four words. The same four words Every Dang Time:

What. Are. Your. Parameters?

And people will REFUSE to help you unless you supply them. The answer can be totally unrelated to your parameters and somebody is STILL going to demand you supply them like you have to "prove" you know what you're doing before you're "worthy" of their advice. The assumption here (and elsewhere) is that *everybody* with a question is a complete beginner without a single clue.

And heaven forbid you're a woman. Boy howdy, you'd better have those parameters in triplicate and NOTARIZED. Because what you "think" you've observed in your tank is *clearly* not what you've actually observed. And your incredibly detailed explanation? That's going to be completely skipped over and not read AT ALL because men who started their first reef tank 6 months ago Know What They're Talking About, but YOU don't because your 20 years of experience Doesn't Count.

It IS possible to have a respectful discussion with other keepers without gatekeeping. Too many of you simply enjoy lording it over others too much.

I hate gate keeping , I can see the other side to though. I usually ask for parameters if not given as I don’t feel qualified to even dish out advice if I don’t see any , I am completely guessing and wouldn’t like livestock/anything else on the line with a guess. Although aren’t we all just guessing keeping the ocean in our living rooms at the end of the day , we should just be nicer to one another not sure where I am going with this lol

Glue corals falling over and ended up in a place difficult to reach…and when retrieving I knock something else over.
Need an exclamation point for this one. Extra point if urchin removed or snail caused to fall

No anger management here - it's just a hobby so relax and enjoy the view...

Before we go any further, what are your parameters?

j/k j/k j/k please forgive me. 😅

I think next time you need a spear. Sorry that sucks , fish can be a terror sometimes
😂 if I didnt care so much about each fish I would have! She is now in a 1200 gallon predator tank so it was worth it to get her into there! Just sucks for me to put my tank back together

Nothing specifically reefing related - but one thing that really annoys me is hardware companies giving 'free samples' for 'unbias' reviews...

Then pushing those reviews as 'proof' of a superior product.

That APPARENTLY I can’t trust the refractometer and calibration fluid that I got from BRS. Now I have to get a scale to weigh salt and a hydrometer to double check everything? If refractometers and calibration fluid aren’t reliable, then why are they recommended to everyone who starts in this hobby? Just tell us to get a scale to weigh salt and a hydrometer from the start!

And apparently testing reagents can be bad? what the heck?!

Can anything be trusted?!

Hi everyone
What gets on your goat about things in this hobby. Share your anger and vent it
Now that I know - impatience.

I can't get too mad about people wanting a tang in a 25gallon, I don't believe it is COMMON knowledge that the tank is too small.

But I Set it up 2 weeks ago and added a nem, 3 corals and 4 fish, and things have gone to hell.... That storyline has grown old for me. I'll still try and help, but dang.

Peppermint shrimp.

"I have some aiptasia, what should I do?"

"Oh, get a peppermint shrimp!"

"Yeah, get a peppermint shrimp!"

"Get a couple peps, that'll clear you right up."

"Yeah, second on the peps!"

Meanwhile, my IM20 is absolutely stuffed to the gills with aiptasia while the three peppermints and the bristletail filefish in it wave at me.
Folks have unrealistic expectations about Peppermint shrimp.

They work just fine, but they only eat baby Apitasia that you cannot see with the unaided eye.
Once you can see them they are too large for a shrimp to eat.

If you zap Aptasia with kalk paste or something, then the peppos will stop them growing back.

Oh yes, what irritates me the most in the hobby ... UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS :-)

Lol. I have the same feelings about pithos crabs and hair algae. Mine is sporting hair algae on his head and steals food from corals, and that is about it. But sorry, have a peppermint that is wonderful with aptasia elimination.

Nothing really aggravates me about this hobby "except" that when many people on forums won't accept that I keep my fish immune and don't have to quarantine or medicate and none of them have died of a "communicable" disease like ich or velvet in about 45 years and I am constantly told that that is because I am lucky, my undergravel filter kills the parasites, my UV light (that I have never used) kills them, or the sponges in my tank sucks them up, or the fish I keep are not delicate enough or a whole bunch of ridiculous reasons that some people make up.

But nothing else in the hobby annoys me.

I did have an invasive sponge that I stupidly added that completely took over the tank and killed most of my corals. That took me a couple of years to eliminate so my tank doesn't look as good as it once did, but it's a hobby and it is getting back to its former self.

I was embarrassed to show my tank right after that. 😬

you're probably 100% correct but mine have gotten it when small and completely keep it in check. not sure if thats the point (them getting it before it can grow to a certain size)

But three weeks would be fine, right? 😄

Kidding, kidding.
