Hi Reefers, kinda new here so trying it out.

As of now, I have a 45 gallon tank to start with since I have no prior experience.

Inside the tank I have
2 clownfish (couple), who host in the Yellow malu anemone.
1 small blue tang.
1 bloodshrimp
1 sea cucumber
3 sand sea stars.
1 yellow watchmen goby.
1 Mandarin Dragonet
2x turbo snails

Been wanting to add 1 more fish about the size as a the blue tang, also colorful and reef safe. Not eating corals nor anemone.

Any colorful suggestions? Been looking at the angel fish and coral beauty but they’re about 80% reef safe.
Might eat corals or anemone. So a bit risky.

So something else but just as striking in beauty.

The blue tang is going to get huge. Are you planning to rehome him as he gets bigger?

Because I’m a beginner and was told by the store they won’t grow that big cause of the tank size and will adjust to it, after doing some research came to the conclusion that, that is lots of BS. So I’ll have to give him a new home when he outgrows it. So sadly yes.

I hear the tang police coming.

Personally a 45 is too small for the tang, if you’re not planing on upgrading soon I suggest looking to re home him and keep it with smaller dwarf fish.

With the color scheme you’ve got going on and other inhabitants a fire fish would look nice in there. They are very peaceful and a good community member.

Be very cautious of that LFS for giving you that advise. Saltwater fish are not like fresh in the way they grow to their tank size. Saltwater fish will continue to grow regardless of tank sizes.

If that LFS is your only option then personally I would ask the community here at Reef2reef before going back in there and listening to them, that was bad advice and it sounds like they were more interested in the sale.

Then any tang from different genus’s like bristletooth tomini scopas could work with plans to up size to125-180 gallons within a couple years . If you’re going to give them to someone else I’d avoid another tang all together.

LFS are known for giving bad advice. Not all of them do, but I have seen countless stories where they give advice that is very controversial or is done to sell you something. If you ever have doubts or questions, I would come here first! Great tank by the way; just make sure you rehome the tang!

Freshwater fish suffer from the same myth. Most of the commonly kept are small species. I'd like to see someone try to keep a Redtail Catfish in a 20 gallon for any length of time.

Im just going to say it. The sand sifting stars are going to starve. So will the turbo snails and sea cucumber. A good chance the mandarin will also unless your dumping in tons of pods. Your tank is too new and too clean to support animals that sustain on detritus. Im guessing the same LFS sold you them also?
