Why do people buy expensive ATO?

So, this might just prove how clueless I am, but I have to ask: Why are people shelling out $200, $300, or more for Auto Top-Off (ATO) systems? A quick search at BRS shows all the popular options: Smart ATO, ATO+, and a bunch of other fancy-sounding names. But at their core, these are just level...

Scary I know.... but has logic to account for catastrophic failures, and I watch for slow trends/need to recalibrate with occasional checks with a tropic marin hydrometer.

Saves a lot of time and is very stable.

I started off high tech, as most stuff has failed now I run low tech, and I am extremely sceptical of snake oil potions and high tech in the reef tank, call me a Luddite!

I don't measure pH, because why measure something unless you have a plan to deal with it? Maybe if I was going to set up an off cycle refugia and I wanted to see how the pH varied over time and how the off cycle refugia countered it.

I don't worry about high phosphates. Mine usually run .5 ppm.
