I dont use a protein skimmer on any of my 5 tanks. Ive even been given a few and used for a while only to remove them. No noticeable benefit from them as opposed to weekly water changes/cleaning mechanical filters. Which I do anyway.

Also dont ask for something to be ID before I research it myself.

Kudoes. Come join us on “What’s in skimmate thread”.

I appreciate that you research ID before asking the community for an ID.

Dose phyto.

(Okay, not everyone does but a lot do and I find it a total waste)
This is something I have never tried for my tank

water changes
mechanical filtration
Ca, Mg, P04, NH3 testing
ICP
daily maintenance
weekly maintenance
quarantine (I do buy QT)
vacuuming
sump cleaning
pump cleaning
coral acclimation (dump, dip, dunk)
Sure I am missing other "must do" things.

Weekly water changes performed at 9am on every Saturday for over a decade on my 75 reef. That particular day I wouldn't have to dose anything until sunday morning. Never missed a Saturday either, even with the Flu.
Wow that’s some dedication. I have goals of weekly WC or sometimes feel good about EOW. But yeah, sometimes life gets in the way here!

I’m a rule follower on my current tank, lol! Ive broken plenty of rules in the past though. I’ve just had enough experience to find that the rules are rules for a reason. At least my rules. I waterchange, skim, sent an icp in the last six months, test weekly, observe daily, QT fish, dip corals, clean sump and pumps on a semi regular basis.

Oh I just thought of something I don’t do! I haven’t changed my uv bulb. It’s been a year and a half in and still haven’t done it. It was put online for ostreopsis and may remove it to do the maintenance on the bulb, set it aside for as needed/emergency use between my two tanks. It would be nice to not need it now that my tank is stable. Reduce sump clutter and simplify plumbing for sure.

I also quit using mechanical filtration a while back. It’s overrated for sure.

There are rules?

I run a very basic setup. Return pump, heaters, skimmer. No UV, no Fuge, no mechanical filter unless skimmer counts.

I run dual heaters, dual return pumps. Redundant where critical.

I test very infrequently. That has bit me before though.

I run as natural of lighting spectrum and load as I can. Not focused on maximizing growth.

I run my tank colder. 75.5-76F.

I open the blinds and let my tank have as much natural light as possible.
Sunshine if we ever get it...
I've always put my tank in front of a window.
While I don't have one in front of a window I have one that gets early sun for while and another that gets late afternoon sun. I don't think LED will ever be able to match the look of natural sunlight. Even my Gal who isn't really into the tanks commented about how awesome they look when the sun is hitting them. Fish looks especially nice under natural light.

EDIT: Back to the original question. Not everyone does this but enough do that I find it pretty annoying. Make a post asking what something is and how to kill it or get rid of it. Why in the world someone wants to kill something when they don't even now if its beneficial or not is beyond me. Its that sterile hate hitchhiker mentality that seems to be gaining in popularity. Scared of anything that isn't added by them. The mystery critters are much of the fun for me but I'm also not scared of a little algae lol.

Couldn't agree more with this whole post.
There's absolutely NOTHING like a tank in the sun 🌞.
Everything just comes to life.
Definitely agree with the edit part of the post wholeheartedly.
