when to replace MH ballast

i have been running my metal halide ballast for about 5 years now. i was wondering, do you ever need to replace the ballast? or do i wait for it to stop working? any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

I've had my PFO dual HQI's for 7 years and no problems, still going strong. Usually it's something else that goes bad, connector, wire. If you want to try the new electronic one's to use less energy - but how much less?

I would guess and say when they stop working?

thanks for the replies guys. yeah i was just wondering if they lose anything as they get older?
