I have been buying corals for a long time usually from local lfs. but want to know where do they get the unique pieces from ? I see alot of cool coral but would never find that at the lfs.so where do they get them from yeah I know the ocean or another store but which store scores the best corals ?

What kind of corals are you looking for? I've noticed most of our sponsors here tend to carry more of one type or the other, somewhat specialized I guess.

Happy to provide my opinion via PM if you want.

Most of the nice pieces are from those who get to cherry pick from the wholesalers. LFS usually just order from a list and really can't see exactly what they are ordering.

wholesalers or they import their own stuff but you'd be amazed how much bread and butter corals they have to go thru just to get one cherry/unique piece

ok so if one opens an online store and gets his or her business tax id number..where would I then get the list of wholesalers that sell coral..is there a list some where of all the coral wholesalers?

Alot of the sponsors here have alot of nice corals....also some of the reefers here have some very unique pieces that they occasionally frag. But i definitely agree wholesalers and first picks the stores get are usually the best and most unique.

are you actually trying to get names of some? I can point you in the direction of a few, but they all have high minimums and require a business license. Otherwise- it's part of the same game- wholesalers try and find LFS's to sell to, while LFS's try and find wholesalers to buy from. Suppose it's the same as opening a resteraunt- if I opened a sushi bar I'd have to go searching for seafood sellers and then figure out who sells the better quality or the cheapest and all that.
Try googling "fish wholesalers" and see what you get, you'll probably have to wade through a ton of food supplies to get a livestock seller.

Its all about having the connects with your wholesaler/distributor so you get first dibs.

So are you trying to open a store, or are you just trying to find out where retailers are getting their "Ultra" corals, so you obtain a tax ID number (which is easy to get), and pay 95% less than what the corals are selling for?

I'm thinking it's the last one.

Sure drop 10grand on a couple orders then you get 3 nice pieces.... You have to move tons of plain Jane coral to grab a couple ultras.... I'm sure google would also get you farther than this forum will.... That kind of Info is top secret...

It's true, the best way to get nice pieces is if you know wholesalers. But how do you get a hold of them? that's a secret. Only the select few are chosen! I used to cherry pick corals but it takes a while. You need to look at everything really closely...like looking for treasure. Then, you have to do it again just in case you missed something.

I like zoas/palys so the forums are better and you don't have to cherry pick. You never know what the wholesaler gets either. When they are unpacking it seems like they don't even know. Local hobbyist stuff is more hardy compared to their wild stuff.

But when it comes to fish, they are super cheap. It always makes me wonder how much they get their stuff for. I'm telling you, it must be pennies with the exchange rate...not pennies but you know what I mean.:spiderman:

It takes contacts and money. A friend of mine use to have a store well he shut it down and runs it out of his house now. Well he just got an order in yesterday. There where two pieces he really wanted. Before the wholesaler would sellthem to him he had to spend so much on other stuff just to buy the two pieces he really wanted. Basically he ended up with half of a shipment that he really did not want just so he could get those two pieces he did want.

its all about who you know, getting to cheery pick, and spending lots of money at the wholesalers

It's about the know and wholesalers aren't that hard to find just research I had to do it and I'm still finding new ones!
