A Zoa is a Zoa. Colors vary, but I don't think of any of them as "high end".

Take "high end" Zoas and put them next to "regular" Zoas in the same tank and they will perform equally based on the conditions.

Marketing makes them "high end".

Hahaha! If only that were true!

I consider any zoa that costs more than ~$80 per polyp to be "high end"... And I'm not talking WWC pricing. Everything from them is that expensive! :D

Some is marketing, some is difficulty and some is availability. The list posted earlier is a good start.

I am trying to get an idea of which zoas are now considered high end zoa please post some names and pic if you have them. I want to start my collection.

A lot of it is valuation. The newer stuff commands a higher price until it makes it was around so I'm not sure that's the metric you want to use to chose stuff for your garden. Naturally some of these newer strains are expensive because they really are 'special'.

@Dom I hear what you're saying and I disagree with you in part. Some like frankie's acid trips, predators, even gmks are weeds and do well as common strains (nirvanas where onece $100pp too in the spring of 2018). On the other hand OG wolverines, Soul Suckers, dragon glass, emperor v2s and mohicans are just a little more difficult to keep or are melt prone. Stuff like poinsettias, OG (not CK) Bozo birthdays, ultimate chaos and dayglow volcanos are virtually impossible to find and so command a much higher price- and rightfully so. I totally agree with your point in #12.

@rox I would suggest you approach it from the perspective of 'which red, green, blue, purple, orange' strains do I like best and are not overly difficult to keep?' A $30 frag of tazers is just as good as a $100 polyp of black orchids for most folks.

@SchrutesReefs thanks for the shout out. I paid and extra $50 on something from Legendary Corals recently just because I couldn't find enough stuff to get to the $350 'free shipping.' That means we're not the crazy ones right? lol

@nano reef if you're interested I have a nice little mixed batch up in the sales forum with a few 'higher ends'. Otherwise Cherry Corals, Blue Line Corals, and Maria's Coral reef are all worth a visit and offer discounted shipping (if you're in the mid west) or free shipping past a certain point.

I love the classic. They are more colorful imo. Scramble eggs, Rasta, Mandarins, and yes to Gatorades.
I just missed a mini colony of mandarins for 99 cent, He had mini colony of bebb, utter chaos, sakuras sunrise, scrambled eggs all were 99 cent 3 forest fire rhodactis for 10, watermelon chalice .99 and hot pick goni 15 and 4 speckled kraks for 65! I attempted to bid and rejected because of a strike that wasnt my fault(long story) I have been sick every since! I was bidding on the speckled kraks and the others were just a bonus! I had never heard of mandarin orange until the auction but agreed the cheapies are just as nice if not better then the ones I have been spending a fortune for! My plan is cheapies in my tank.. High ends in the frag tank! LOL

@billyocean What are your favorites of the ones you have? Nice collection BTW

@ littlebigreef I will check out what you have! I have acquired quite a few in the last month or so but still o the look out for more and I cant believe Nirvanas were high end in 2018! That scary! I am probably throwing a lot of money down the drain because it a few years most of what I have just got will be crazy cheap! Nirvanas are literally everywhere and crazy cheap. A few months ago my lfs sold me at least 15 or more polyps for 9.99. i think he still has them on his website for that AJsaqariums.com

A few months ago I id one o f the dumbest thing ever! I was doing a WC and the water got below my frag rack and the lights fried all my frags but a few!

Its so much fun replacing corals you already had! LOL

These are much harder to keep, grow, frag and sell than the likes of rastas. And yes people can be successful as I've had all these for over 9 months some up to 3 years. But they're not something that you find on ebay, most sellers don't have quite a few of these(dayglos, strats, ultimate space monster, godbeast). Then you get into more common HE zoas like thermo, hep, Marvin's etc

20220402_204624.jpg
What high ends grow the fastest? I lost my huge collection last year and buying a lot of them back! I didnt even have them long enough to know which grew fast except for lsoh, frankies, JF kraks and they never put out a polyp in the three months that I had them. My gmk's kept melting but I just got one and its already had a baby! Finally lol

I am hereby reserving the name,

"International Whirlwind Poke in the Eye Multiplex Spine Twister"

... just in case a new Zoa comes along one day that I want to sell for big, big buc$s!

Surprisingly, GMK and Big Bird with Kermit for my tank. Depends on the conditions though. Some people grow strats like no tomorrow and my frags just added one polyp the past two months.

Gatorades. Very rare and exclusive.

IMG_3192.jpg

With all my beautiful acros and more expensive zoas in the tank, it's my Gatorades that always catch visitors eyes. They always comment on them!

Funny how us hobbyists have this value chart based on our little internal economy, but then outsiders humble us by enjoying our run of the mill corals :D

Well said! a Zoa is a Zoa, and marketing/trend dictates cost.

These AOI zoas were once going for around $500 for a covered plug like seen here, but now I see them for closer to $100.

I believe it's a combination of demand/hype mixed with being slower growers. Gatorades and Rastas are gorgeous but also vigorous and fast growing so the price is nice and low.

I had GMKs 3 times and always melted except the last one. . Lost big bird and strat from my illnesses! I am 64 and never been sick in my life with anything serious But Last 3 years I have been hospitalized and each time were long stays and long recoverys after.

First time they were mowed over by snails and to sick to keep lifting! So I learned and bought a **** tone of frag racks both sand based and walls and a huge 3 tier to hang from wall! !! Plus made a frag tank. Each time I had just had big orders of zoas come in and I am now down to about 20 zoas! I lost my vision temporary in Oct and after 2 surgery's I can finally see but very blurry! One more surgery and praying for better results!

I am officially throwing in the towell! I lost almost everything not just zoas when I lost vison and mainly over a crazy algae bloom!! Big mistake changing brands of gfo right before plus had some unseen aptasia hitchikers and bubble algae that sure didint help! My fault for not quarantine! !

I tore frag tank down and fixing to tear down 36 gallon and just keeping one small tank! I love this hobby and it sucks and hurts me to the core but I have to many sick days and just cant do it anymore :( I wish my hubby was into the hobby but he could care less:(

Anyone who lives near Tampa I still have 2 big orders coming in and wont have enough room now so I will let them go real cheap or trade for bigger colonys or shroom. These are all small frags! ! Holding off on orders until after tax time Orders are from CB and ASD. Spent over 3k and they wont refund me!

Thanks to anyone who read my long journal LOL

Sorry to hear that. Scaling back is a good idea to get reacquainted with the hobby on the small scale.
