I have a real issue with GHA and it seems that the only way to keep it at bay is to have a high magnesium content in the tank.
Yes I know..why is the phosphate so high...its somewhere between 0.5 and 1.00...I have no idea what is wrong. I have a few fish..lots of softies and feed once or twice a day. Water changes done every 2 weeks...and I can't get it lower.
...and that's why I use high mag and it works.
SO...( I'm in the UK ) what is the best/cheapest magnesium supplement I should use. I have Redsea but its expensive.
Any thought please. Thanks in advance.

Is this product available in the UK?

https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/magnesion-liquid-magnesium-supplement-brightwell-aquatics.html
I use it and it seems to be fine for getting my magnesium levels where I wanted them.on BRS it seems it’s cheaper than Red Sea reef foundation c (Mg). 1 L of Red Sea is $28.99 us and 2L of brightwells Magnesion is $26.93

But Red Sea may be more concentrated and you would dose less of it maybe, idk.
I dont think I can get it here unfortunately.

What makes one brand’s magnesium ‘best’?

They’re all much of a muchness. The best one is the one you can get readily IMO.

I use Red Sea personally, because there are multiple RS dealers within driving distance and just about every major online retailer stocks it.

I dont agree with the premise of the thread. Why do you believe it to be true?

You say “it works”. Works for you, or you read it somewhere?

In the past it was true that one mag supplement (Kent) could kill bryopsis when dosed significantly, but other brands did not necessarily work and I think the effect was likely an impurity.

I’ve not seen convincing evidence that one can defeat green hair algae with magnesium.

I use the Aqua forest mag, you can get it at a reasonable price for a bulk bucket in the UK. There is also a reef calculator for mixing. I add 50 grams to 10 Litres of RO water for top up with no detrimental effects.

maybe I needed to explain further...I was told by a friend with many years experience in marine tanks I to raise the mag over a week or two and get it up to around 1450...within 10 days the GHA..( and there was a lot ) was almost 'gone'. It has now started to come back so I am raising the mag from its current 1320 back up to 1450. Raising the mag was the only thing I changed in the tank during the experiment

Well, I don't believe it was the elevated magnesium, but cannot prove it. That level is not that high and people with mag that high still sometimes have hair algae.

How did you lower the magnesium? More water changes?

That said, raising it also won't hurt anything. I'm not sure what's available in the UK.

Here are my DIY magnesium recipes:
