Looks like a sponge. Mine have that same center sponge look and will become more dense when it matures more. Just from my experience

I would say sponge, most are harmless but you could always get rid of it if you wanted (when in doubt throw it out)

Sponge. Easily killed off with small amounts of Kalk paste or peroxide. Highly beneficial filter feeder though. It's like having a filter sock but instead of cleaning the waste out yourself, it is converted to biomass by the sponge that then filters even more waste from the water.
