Why do we insist on saying it backwards?

Anemones host Clowns. It's not the other way around. That's how conventional English works. Why do we, as a community, insist it's the other way around? This has aggrivated me for years, and yes, I made an account exclusively to ask this question. Why do we insist on being so very wrong?

I don't care what anyone in the hobby says, an anemone hosts the Clownfish, not the other way around 😡

Yes its like saying the Male looks after the Female in people terms. Look at the animal world. Some females chase the male away after birth and the male just drops off food at the den entrance { fox } Some Females eat the Male after Intercourse { preying Mantis }🤪 However I am Extremely Happy that that is all in the whole wide world that that is what is troubling you👰‍♀️

I think it's just easier to say my clowns host in a bubble tip anemones vs the other way. I imagine so many new people in the hobby have something to do with it as well. I'm still wondering why we call lime water kalkwasser, unless your German of course.

Just present this analogy to someone who thinks this way. You’re the clownfish and a favorite restaurant of yours is the anemone. If you go to that restaurant to eat, ask them, are you hosting the restaurant or is the restaurant hosting you?

I’m not sure that the anemone is hosting so much as the clownfish are squatting in the anemone. It benefits the anemone with all the feces it can eat so it’s more of a dumpster than a host, perhaps?

Welcome to Reef2Reef, the greatest community out of water!

I think if people saw an anenome hosting a clown they would understand why they are wrong. However people can be ignorant and speak before gathering knowledge.

That raises a question for me. I was trying to find a way to lower Magnesium , and Calcium . AI warned of great risks of using Kalkwasser. Why is that ?

What did AI say the risks were? From a chemical standpoint its a base so it could cause burns to you. In the reef tank if you add too much at one time or it sits in one spot too long it can cause precipitation. Make sure to dose it in a high flow area. Also it adds calcium so to use it to lower calcium is not correct.

@jwranson Welcome! I dont do clowns they are the devil both the ones with fins and the ones with arms. Your question is lost on me.

Welcome to R2R!

I bet it's just a language/habit thing. Hosting sounds like doing something actively and people see the clownfish as the active part in the symbiotic relationship, so saying "hosting an anemone" just got stuck with people.

Ecologically speaking this is of course nonsense and the anemone is the host.

Because AI dosen't understand it or at least some of the people who have used it don't really know how properly which results in problems 🤔

It says its risky to use in a reactor as it precipitates Magnesium and throws calcium , and Alk out of balance and is only for advanced Aquarists. Please explain Precipitates. Is that like the layman term salt creep ? Where salt comes out of solution and beds on the glass ?
