Opinion no science behind it, I notice mine doing this to either flush new water through itself, kind of like cleaning, and when I feed phyto it does this, my thought is its trying to inflate with as much phyto as it can to eat it. Just personal experience no science...

Did your elegance ever return to a “normal” state?

Mine is super poofy right now. I didn’t know it could inflate that much. But I placed him just under an overhand that gets good light but not too strong for the purpose of acclimation.

As for water parameters, mine are:
Temp 78-79
ph 8.05-8.2
salinity 1.025
nitrate < .5
phos < .04
Ammonia < .01
mG 1325
Alk 8.58
CA 423

I've just not seen elegances inflate so much.

Mine did inflate a lot, but the tentacles were always long when it did so---not retracted like yours in the pic. Anyway, definitely don't count on me for any good advice regarding elegance coral because mine died a couple weeks ago. ;Dead I think it had that elegance wasting disease. At least, that's what I'm telling myself because it couldn't possibly be my fault;)

Mine doesnt puff out as much but it does retract a few days every couple months and will only have short tentacles for the time. Ive had mine for i think 4+ years now

Okay,

I was curious if this was perhaps a light seeking behavior.

Or if this was a precursor to the dreaded elegance coral syndrome (ECS) I’ve read about.

I’ll keep observing since he is starting to slowly return to form and stretch his tentacles out again.

Thanks!
