Hi all!

I'm fairly new to the reef hobby. My younger brother got me addicted years ago but was only recently been able to start keeping reef tanks. I was always into reptiles, but staring at my brothers tank during my weekly visits made me really want on when my iguana passed on and it freed up some room in my office. One tank turned into 2 and I'm debating setting up an old 75 gallon I have sitting in my garage.

Both of the tanks are overstocked(bad advice from LFS I no longer use). If problems arise I will move fish around/sell to the new store I am going to now.

Tank specs

LPS tank

Bi weekly 5gallon changes. Did have a small algae outbreak a few weeks back. But it's almost gone now. I skipped a waterchange and was out of town and tank was over fed. Bad combo

20 gallon long
3 240gph Koralia nano pumps
aquaclear 50 modded into a small refugium.

Lighting
30" finnex marine+ 2 led
Plus 3 2' T5 lights( actinic, blue plus, coral growth)

DIY skimmer using bottle, wood air stone and a big air pump.

Unknown amount of live rock and white super small grain sand.

Tank as of this morning

SPS Dom tank

Weekly 5 gallon water changes

20 gallon long
1 240gph Koralia nano pumps(adding another one soon)
2 425gph Koralia nano pumps
aquaclear 110 modded into a small refugium.

Lighting
30" finnex marine+ 2 led
Plus 3 2' T5 lights( actinic, blue plus, coral growth) thinking of switching out the blue plus for a 10k.

DIY skimmer using bottle, wood air stone and a big air pump.

Unknown amount of live rock and white super small grain sand.

Tank as of this morning

My 10 gallon quarantine

Nothing special but I like it better than bare bottom with PVC fittings for hides. Fish seems to like it more as well when they need to spend time in it when first coming home. I'm actually considering making it another small reef tank with a pair of clowns since I'm done stocking both 20 longs.

1 Koralia nano 240gph
Aquaclear 30 running with a few mangroves

20" finnex marine+ 2 led

Some live rock and sand

Tank as of right now

Plus I have an extra 10 gallon to setup as a hospital tank as needed and I keep a sponge in the quarantine tank if I need to setup fast.

My goal with these tanks were to have a simple setup. And to DIY as much as I could to save on cash.

I've just started making my own food and it's a big money saver. I spent $10-$12 on the seafood and I already had some brine cubes laying around to add.

Salmon
Scallops
Clam
Octopus/squid
Shrimp
Bribe shrimp

Makes up the main mix. Plus I made a small batch and added Reef Snow, zooplankton and phytoplankton on days I want to feed the corals. Plus on the SPS tank I use Reef Roids and the LPS gets Reef Chili( wanted to see the differences between the 2 before committing to a single product.)

Stocking list

SPS tank

2 Maine mocha clowns
1 royal gramma
1 purple fire fish
1 6 line wrasse
1 lawnmower blenny
Orange spot watchman goby w/ small tiger snapping shrimp

Inverts
2 skunk cleaner shrimp
Serpent star
Red starfish(can't remember the name)
Misc. snails and hermits

LPS tank

2 Wyoming White clowns
2 red firefish
1 canary blenny
1 bangaii cardinal
1 tailspot blenny
1 solorensis wrasse
1 Yellow watchman goby w/ large tiger snapping shrimp

Inverts

1 serpent star
2 peppermint shrimp
1 or 2 emerald crabs
Misc snails and hermits

That's all for now. I'll update with some coral pics today or tomorrow. But all are happy so far.

Thanks for looking!

Mike

Few coral and fish pics.

Believe it or not almost all of the SPS stuff came from a petco by my work. Luckily the department manager is a die hard reefer so he's always bringing in whatever people ask for. They tend to have a better selection than most places.

Enjoy.

Made some purchases last night.

Ordered a few screw in LED bulbs to put over the HOB refugiums. Figure those will work better than the cheap clip on LEDs I have over the tanks right now. They are geared more for plant growth so hopefully it helps the macro grow a little better. On the LPS tank I have grape caulerpa and a few mangroves and on the SPS tank I will be running chaeto and most likely will remove the mangroves I have.

I also ordered a hydor smartwave to add to the SPS tank. Right now I have a powerhead on a timer to mix the flow up a little bit. I think this will be a good addition to the tank and I'll have more options to customize the flow. Since I'm only using the Koralia nano I'm hoping the click noises I've read about won't be to bad. Tanks are in my back office so a little noise isn't going to bother anything.

Both of these will be in tomorrow and I will update when they are setup.
