Hi ,

Got a wild tortusa frag a week back .
It hasn't been doing good and from yesterday , could notice STN from the base and tissues peeling off at the side .
Water parameters pretty normal and everything else doing good .
Now I suspect red bugs but can't find them at all .
It was dipped in Bayers before introduction . But read that sometimes tortusa variants do not take dip that good ..

So the question is should I leave it as it is or dip it ?

Here's the before shot after 1 day in my tank -

And here is it now - you can see it stn from the base -

To speculate on cause without values for Ca/Mag/Alk, SG and temp is difficult, really need numbers.
To see RB take a macro shot and and then crop the image, and post it, if RB are present you will be able to see them.
The piece looks pretty rough even before the STN, was it shipped?
Always start with Alk, values and swings when working with stony corals.

Thanks for the reply .

Alk might be a cause especially it was hovering around 7.6-7.8 for the last week.
But it shot up to 8.2 over teh past 2 days.
Am slowly bringing it down back to 7.8-7.9.

Calcium is around 520 (its high from the beginning without dosing) and Magnesium is 1600 (high too).

No it wasn't shipped .. I received it from my friend .

Abhishek

Wild pieces definitely are more challenging. The chemistry is off for sure. What testing methods are you using?

What salt mix are you using? How old is the tank?

My suggestions are to get the chemistry ratios corrected, what is the SG and what method are you using to measure, I suspect it may be high.
If the piece continues to STN from the bottom you may need to frag off the upper pieces at the margin of live tissue to attempt to save the piece.
RB while troublesome can be present and the coral may lose coloration or show decreased polyp extension, but typically not STN.

Do not be too disappointed if lose piece, just get your chem tuned in before attempting another piece.

Thanks for the reply ..

Well am using whole line of Aquaforest with Aquaforest Prodibiotic reef salt.
The S.G is 1.026 -1.027 which is why the Ca and Mg is high .

Tank is pretty new about 2 months . So am not much worried with STN from chemistry issues. But RB , am worried ..

Testing is done using Hanna checker for Alk , Salifert for Calcium .

Yeah, I believe I shouldn't have tried the wild piece but since my other acros were doing great, I thought of giving it a go ..

Abhishek

Ok, it wasn't RB .. phewww!!!
Alk swing which caused it to start STN . Slowly brought back Alk to 8 and allowed it to heal by itself without any disturbance for 3-4 days. Kept feeding it twice a day with oyester feast and AA ( Not sure if sps actually eat or not . Please don't get all over me .. Its just a psychological thing for me thinking that they eat ).
Anyways after 4 days, STN stopped and no more tissue was peeling. Water changed 10%.
Then fragged it a little above the dead tissue and now its healing in the tank .
What do you guys think ?
